CELORON — A semi trailer storing what was believed to be scrap metal and tires went up in flames late Friday morning, sending large amounts of black smoke into the air.
Firefighters from Celoron and Lakewood responded to a wooded area behind a building on Livingston Avenue. Massive flames could be seen coming from a single trailer, situated among several tress and tall grass.
Celoron Fire Chief Jamison Justham said crews arrived to find plenty of fire and smoke coming from the trailer. “It was burning completely uncontrolled,” he said. “Came on scene, got it knocked down.”
In addition to water, firefighters also utilized foam to smother the flames.
Justham said an excavator was being brought in to help firefighters get to other parts of the trailer not easily accessible.
Officers with the Ellicott Police Department as well as Chautauqua County EMS and a county fire coordinator also responded to Celoron on Friday.
The cause of the fire was not yet known.
