Hanover readies beach for summer visitors
HANOVER — Beachgoers rejoice; the Hanover Town Beach will open soon!
Hanover officials announced Monday that the town beach is almost ready for opening day June 24.
Steve D’Angelo, Hanover’s highway superintendent, stated that his crews have been working down at the beach and the boat launch to prepare the facilities for a busy season and beautiful summer.
“We were able to get the water and toilets problem fixed at the boat launch,” he said. “We eventually had to call in Guarcello’s; they had to order the parts (needed for the repair).”
D’Angelo noted that there are bigger problems with the plumbing at the boat launch facilities, and those will need to be addressed relatively soon — possibly next year.
“We got the beach cleaned up,” he added. “(Though) there’s not a lot of sand down there this year. It’s just a lot of small pebbles and gravel, but there’s not much we can do about that.”
The beach, such as it is, has been raked, but folks will have to bear with a less cushy terrain. Lake Erie throws what it will upon its shores, and this year, that meant a lot of rocks.
D’Angelo explained that the matter cannot be resolved by simply carting sand from nearby streets and parking lots to dump on the beach.
“We can’t move (sand) from one place to another — we have (no idea whether) it’s contaminated with something or not,” so it can’t be dumped on the beach, he explained.
Municipal workers emptied all of the trash bins on the beach, as well. To help keep the beach clean, visitors and residents are asked to please deposit all garbage in the designated receptacles, and to clean up after their pets so that everyone can enjoy the public areas.
The beach will be open through the summer when there is a lifeguard on duty, and when weather permits. If a small craft warning has been issued because of choppy waters, both the beach and the boat launch will be closed for safety’s sake. Otherwise, an attendant is on duty at the boat launch from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., though those with a season pass may launch earlier. The price per launch is $7 per boat and $3 per kayak.
For boat launch season passes, town beach parking permits or more information, see the town clerk, Janine Salzman, during regular business hours at town hall.
