The time is ‘Wright’ for construction at Dunkirk park
The plans for added amenities at Dunkirk’s Wright Park will go from paper to real life starting Wednesday. The city has planned a ground breaking to kick off the work at Dunkirk’s eastern-most park.
Mayor Willie Rosas said he is excited to finally see shovels in the ground on this project, which was resurrected two years ago.
“We’re inviting everyone to come out. This is an exciting project; it’s a project we’ve been working on for many years here in the city, even before I came on board. Our development department worked very hard to get this back here and happening and we’re finally going to break ground,” he said.
The ground breaking will take place at Wright Park on April 11 at 10 a.m. There will be parking along Lakefront Boulevard and North Serval Streets. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Engineers Barton and Loguidice finished, renderings at the end of last year, with bids accepted for the work earlier in 2018. The designs include a new multi-purpose court which can be flooded in the winter for an ice rink and splash pad with multiple activity areas for different age appropriateness, as well as a rain garden, new bathrooms, seating, improved parking, updated basketball courts, four new pickleball courts.
Ideas continue to abound for the project, which the development department has said they will seek funding for in a “phase 2,” but in the meantime, the work is still on target to wrap up by the start of Dunkirk’s summer season — Memorial Day.
