Dunkirk school board gets safety panel update

Students from the Dunkirk Middle School musical “Aladdin” perform at a Dunkirk Board of Education meeting Thursday. Performances of the musical will be Nov. 16 and 17 at the middle school.

At Thursday’s Dunkirk Board of Education meeting, three members described their ad hoc committee on school safety’s recent discussion with parents and students.

“Some good ideas were put out there,” said board member Ken Koszlowski, one of the ad hoc committee members, along with Claudia Szczerbacki and Dave Damico.

“We know there’s issues,” he added. “We have to figure out how to address those.”

Szczerbacki said she heard “eye-opening” comments from the students and parents. “They shouldn’t have to be afraid to be in school. It should be a safe place,” she said, expressing a desire for more meetings and discussion on the subject.

Damico said someone at the committee meeting had a great idea: Start a confidential tip line. “It sure made a lot of sense,” he said.

Superintendent James Tracy said a tip line is on the district’s radar. He said that though such lines often lead to a lot of prank calls when they are first installed, those eventually end and the lines become an unquestionable asset to safety.
