18th annual Polar Bear Swim set for Sunday
SILVER CREEK — The 18th Annual Polar Bear Swim is set for this Sunday at the Fireman’s Club — Firehouse on the Lake at 23 Jackson St.
The swimmers brave enough to chance the icy waters of Lake Erie will take the plunge for a number of charities, including Buffalo Children’s Hospital, The Silver Creek Food Pantry, The Silver Creek Rescue Squad, The Sunset Bay Fire Department, and the Silver Creek Fire Department. Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello will be participating in the jump for his 15th year in a row.
“The jump is a challenge for minutes, but it helps people who face a number of challenges daily,” said Borrello of the swim. Borrello won’t be alone in the cold; “I’ll be jumping in with county Legislator Dave Wilfong. We wore Batman and Superman costumes last year. … This year will be another surprise.”
Events begin at noon, including fantasy blackjack, a large Chinese auction, and entertainment by “Rock ‘n Roll to the Rescue.” Food and a full bar will be available as well.
The swim takes place promptly at 1 p.m., for a pledge sheet or information, call 716-934-3775 or email pforge@exploreny.net. Admission to the event is free, but please bring a non-perishable item to be donated to the Silver Creek Food Pantry.
