Tractor trailer overturns on interstate
A tractor-trailer hauling thousands of pounds of fungicide overturned late Thursday morning on Interstate 90.
Members of the Fredonia Fire Department were alerted to the semi on its side around 11:45 a.m. in the westbound lane, around mile marker 462, in the town of Sheridan. Upon arrival, a fire official said the driver of the rig had managed to climb out uninjured.
Lt. Dan Aldrich of the Fredonia Fire Department said at the time of the crash, the semi was carrying 26, 120-gallon drums of fungicide, a pesticide used to kill or prevent the growth of fungi and their spores.
Aldrich said diesel fuel from the semi and a small amount of the fungicide leaked following the crash. Members of the Chautauqua County HAZMAT team, along with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and New York State Police, responded to the interstate.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
Fredonia firefighters remained on scene for about two and a half hours. The interstate was reduced to one lane as a result of the crash.
