The problem with free money

May 13, 2010 - Shawn Paulus

Have I been asleep for a while and miss something? When did grants become “free money”?

County Legislator Doug Richmond was recently talking about buying new buses for CARTS. “I recall when we reviewed this in Audit and Control it was made clear to us that there was no cost to county taxpayers for this particular event.” Come on Mr. Richmond, we did not fall off the turnip truck yesterday. But obviously you must have.

Every working taxpayer in this county is going to pay for it. Last time I checked a grant was tax money collected. Yes, this is a federal grant so it is coming from all taxpayers across this country. But it isn’t FREE MONEY.

Please stop using the words “free money” because unless it comes right off the minting press in Philadelphia or Denver with the words “free money, no need to pay this back” it isn’t free. It is every working man, woman and young adult’s money that you elected officials suck from us on a daily basis so you don’t have to actually try and make a hard decision on what to cut in your spending.
