Focus And Leadership Needed

May 9, 2011 - Dunkirk OBSERVER
Posted by Nicholas L. Dean

News broke last Thursday that Cathy Young won't be taking the county's sales tax increase request to Albany.

For that Friday's edition, The Observer sought and received comment from several local elected officials -- Andy Goodell, Larry Barmore and Rudy Mueller, among others.

I was out of the office Friday and just got in for the day today... and received an e-mail response which Lori Cornell sent me Friday afternoon on the issue.

What follows is the full text of her e-mail comment to me:

"Consistent with my statement last week, I believe we need focus and leadership in growing our economy, creating jobs and revitalizing our neighborhoods to increase county revenues and decrease our dependence on taxes.

We continue to lose population and have fallen behind in job growth. County government must more proactively work to grow our economy, create jobs, and turn around the massive population loss we are experiencing.

Raising taxes - any taxes - will only negate progress by hurting our small businesses, creating job loss, and further increasing the population loss."
