Special area, special people

June 25, 2008 - John D'Agostino
Within the last two weeks, two individuals who have made a difference in the Northern Chautauqua County area have been recognized.

On June 16, the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation honored Richard Johnson with the George B. Weaver Jr. Footprints Award for Johnson’s years of service to this area. Besides being one who led the charge in beginning the Foundation in 1986, Johnson has been a member of numerous organizations, including the Brooks Memorial Hospital board of directors, Dunkirk Rotary and played a key role in revitalizing the Opera House.

On June 25, a special luncheon was held for outgoing Dunkirk Development Director Maclain Berhaupt who is taking a position in Jamestown. During the 90-minute luncheon, city and county officials spoke not only about how much she will be missed, but how much she has the potential to accomplish. Her achievements in the city include the Boardwalk, a high-tech incubator in the future and securing funds for renovations of the Crocker Sprague building.

Congratulations to both are in order for their achievements and their continuing efforts to make our region such a special place to be.
