No winning ways from Fisher
July 28, 2008 - John D'Agostino
This month marks a nine-year anniversary.
Nine years ago, the Buffalo Bills were suiting up for their final training camp at Fredonia State University. It was also the last year — 1999 — the Bills would make the playoffs.
Is there a connection? It is very doubtful. For the Bills, the training camp in the Rochester suburb of Pittsford at St. John Fisher College has been beneficial financially. There are many more corporations in the state’s third-largest city to sponsor the team’s camp compared to this region.
It also has helped in luring more fans from Central New York.
But the successes stop there. Fredonia State was home to the Bills for more than 15 years. The university was associated with some of the team’s most dismal seasons — 1984 and ’85 — and most successful — 1990 through ’99.
Our area and university misses the national attention we once received in the summer months. But the Bills miss a lot more. Since going to Fisher, the playoffs have never been part of the equation.
Let’s hope it’s different this year.
