At the hearing: A voice of opposition

July 26, 2013 - John D'Agostino
Not everyone who spoke July 15 was in favor of the repowering of the NRG Energy Inc. project.

One of the first 10 speakers that evening at the Public Service Commission hearing was from the Sierra Club of the Niagara region. Diane Ciurczak spoke in favor of the plan to upgrade the lines by National Grid.

Isn't it ironic that back when Niagara Mohawk owned the Dunkirk plant they thought it was a good thing and necessary. Then they sell it to NRG. Now their position is that the plant it not necessary. Hmmmm.

I happen to agree with the conversion to natural gas but let us assume that no one knows for sure the future of gas or coal. Who in their right mind would turn their backs on a private sector investment of $500 million?

"The Sierra Club has been out there hitting the airwaves and hitting the emails, hitting people out there. Granted they have viable positions they can make but I don't want somebody from California and the Sierra Club determining the future of Chautauqua County. I want the people who live here, who work here, who rely on the services that we provide and the futures that they want for their children making this decision," Edwards said.

Can we send this to Mr. Edwards? Last I checked Niagra is NOT in California..as not all of the member of the Sierra Club are "outsiders"..in fact many of us reside right here..in Chautauqua County.

How could have he missed this?

My question, why cannot the plant do BOTH. Take say 20% for alternative green energy...and the other 80-% for the gas driven one. Slowly we can convert to alternative energy.

Rep Reed, I would take more seriously if he had not taken all those donations from oil and gas industry.
