Our community hurts
September 24, 2008 - John D'Agostino
Sunday morning left many here in our region and village devastated. An early morning fire in Fredonia claimed the lives of two young children and injured two of the other five family members.
This week, our community has mourned. Staff members at this newspaper have felt the pain, including myself. School students and staff have cried and received counseling. Other members have offered financial support for the family. A prayer service has also been planned.
My neighborhood is within a couple blocks of Water Street. I feel guilty because I woke up as I always do ... and knew nothing of the fire until around 8:30 a.m.
Firefighters and rescue officials here were heroic. They knew the circumstances and did their job.
When you get into the newspaper or media business, you always hope that one day you get a big story. This is not one of those stories you ever want to cover.
The healing process here is still in the early stages. There are a lot of prayers and support being offered for the family. God bless them.
