County employment rises in last two years

September 5, 2007

MAYVILLE - County Executive Greg Edwards has required all county department heads to budget for 2008 with no increases in staff or management salaries. The directive was part of Edwards' request to department heads for their 2008 budget proposal, which also included a flat 7 percent cut in local share cost. Edwards has called for these potential cuts in 2008 due to a reduction in revenue from the .25 percent decrease in sales tax and the elimination of the home energy tax, which will decrease revenues by more than $8 million. If it wasn't for the state mandate that about 20 new full-time jail employees be hired in 2008, it's a safe bet the number of county employees would probably decrease. The reduction in staff would have occurred a year after 19 new employees were added to county government in 2007. After the first week of budget discussion, Edwards said some department heads have proposed fewer employees for 2008. 'How that will play out, I don't know.
