The Capitol Building is one of the many sights to see when visiting Washington, D.C.
With gas prices so high, many families are choosing family vacations at nearer destinations. Two that are especially historical and educational are Washington, D.C., and nearby Gettysburg, Pa., a six- to seven-hour drive from Dunkirk. I (Rosamond) attended my granddaughter’s wedding last weekend in Charles Town, W.Va., which is close to D.C. and Gettysburg. I joined my son and his family from San Diego and drove the hour and a half to D.C., and then hopped a tour trolley right down the street from the Ford Theater where Lincoln was shot. From there, the trolley stopped at nine destinations, where tourists could get off and catch the next trolley to continue the tour. The first stop was the White House, where people could walk around the outside of the building. To tour the inside, you need a pass from your congressman, so if you plan a trip there, be sure to obtain one.
