How did your veggies end up on your plate? There is a growing population who want to know — where it came from, how it got there and exactly where their money is going. The Gong Garden Farm on Webster Road in Fredonia is bustling on a Thursday afternoon, the designated time for shareholders’ weekly pickup. The dirt drive is in a constant state of turnover, with men and women coming to retrieve their produce, and perhaps stop and chat for awhile. “Welcome to your CSA!” says a sign above a stand filled with fresh vegetables, with a list of the crop yielded: arugula, swiss chard, kale, mustard greens, bush beans, onions (red and yellow), peppers (bell and long), long beets, cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini, scallions and leeks. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, in which shareholders buy a share of produce from the garden prior to planting, and enjoy a portion of it throughout the season.
