January 11, 2013

MAYVILLE — The number of welfare fraud arrests in Chautauqua County last year was significantly down compared to 2011. But the numbers are misleading, Sheriff Joe Gerace said....

Let's face it, all bureaucracies self perpetuate themselves. Pitting one against another is hysterically funny. Looking for truth in such a "brawl" is beyond funny.

Ms Schuyler says that if her agency does a better job screening applicants, welfare fraud arrests will naturally drop. Of course they will, yet Gerace chooses to ignore these improvements by contending the drop is deceiving?

Who should we believe, Schuyler and the hard numbers she provides, or a county sheriff who has a well-known reputation of always complaining about never having enough money to do what HE wants.

Even fueling a patrol car gets an incidence number

I find it disturbing that our sheriff is using the backlog of investigations as a pitch to increase the ranks of deputies. Why not assign more deputies to investigate these frauds perpetrated upon the county instead of road patrols? Let the NYST enforce v&t for awhile until the county can get the fraud investigations under control. Certainly in the course of the investigation a deputy witnesses an infraction they could respond but their assignment would be the investigations. The dirty little secret is "incident #s". The more incident #s that are generated the busier you appear. EVERYTHING gets an incident #.

So they want a pat on the back for doing their job? Given the work ethic of today it's not surprising the clever dregs of society get away with fraud. As for the Gerace I'm sure he has another officer that could do that job but then again he never has enough help or money. As for the welfare collectors let's make it as easy as we can. Give them a card to get cash because we wouldn't want to embarrass them. Rent should go directly to the landlord. Cash should not be available to them. No cell phones, computers, Dish TV etc should be available to them. If you want the better things in life get a job and work for them.

rosebud: so sorry that happened to you. But I'm sure you talked to the wrong person/people...Unless the worker just did not give a rats ass about anything. There were higher ups in the system that could of & would of taken care of the situation. That is considered fraud & I know that dept takes their job seriously & if you were to complain to them & it was legit (which I'm sure it was) the worker might be out of a job for allowing a forged signature.A majority of ppl on welfare get their rent vouchered directly from the dept of social services so I don't know how this lady was given her full rent in her benefit..Thats almost unheard of nowadays..Or was there a balanve due that s.s. did not cover? And my opinion on your remark about her drug overdose..anyone can become addicted & addiction is an illness, money comes & goes in life but a life does not. She was someones daughter-maybe a sister,aunt,mom,cousin,etc..how do you know she was not trying to reach out for

We need to eliminate welfare entirely. Once we do that, we can funnel that money to the job creators and they will hire again. Until we give them some incentive to hire, job creation will remain stagnant.

I was told, when a woman signed my name to a rent receipt, that as long as she had a receipt, there was nothing I could do. I just love having someone screw me out of my rent & then am told , "too bad".. I no longer rent to welfare as they have ALL the rights & I have none. The one that forged my name used her extra money from not paying her rent to buy more drugs. She died of an drug over dose. I didn't lose any sleep over that one..
