January 18, 2013

MAYVILLE — As if foretold by Wednesday’s Human Services Committee, legislators on Thursday also voiced varying points of view regarding resolutions to sell the Chautauqua County Home....

You're right, DarkStar, there are many ways the home can save money, but Edwards refuses to implement any of the savings identified in the CGR report.

The thing that bothers me most is the CCH is being sold NOT b/c it operates in the red, but b/c it's a quick way to acquire a large sum of money to pay down the aggregate debt for ALL county services, mainly due to Edwards' and his colleagues' inept leadership.

If operating in the red is the sole criteria to privatize non-mandated services, why hasn't any action been taken against the CCSD? How much profit does it generate? I'd be willing to bet the sheriff's red ink is AT LEAST twice as much as the CCH.

While I can't give you specifics I'm sure the new owner will do what every other pivate business does and that is look for ways to reduce costs and ways to increase revenues.

For example it's surprising how much room is used for area not directly involved in patient care, if half of that space was converted to assisted living it would increase the patient count and revenues.

As for cost savings, they can come from all sorts of areas. For example, cutting back on the obscene number of call off of the staff would help reduce overtime while increasing the quality of care.

FredoniaFred....The residents in the County can not be placed in assisted living, independent living,or adult daycare....They need constant care....Where will these people go,when they are turned away?....I will tell you, they will placed miles away from their families and out of state....How do I know this?....Because it has happened to me and my family before and it is happening again right now with a family member....So you keep worrying about the $5 a year it might cost you....Enjoy your burgers from the fast food places, make sure you chew good,I wouldn't want you to choke to death....

The new owner will not cut expenses but add revenues thru assisted living, independent living, adult daycare etc.

Really? Then tell us FF, how will the new owner(s) cut an additional $3M in operating expenses per/yr (on top of the savings outlined in the CGR report) AND maintain the same level of care & service JUST TO BREAK EVEN? Don't forget to factor in the annual property taxes that the CCH was exempt from.

Sounds like you and all those who support selling the CCH couldn't care less what happens to the home once it's sold. It's this type of selfish attitude that makes me thankful I don't live in Chat Co anymore. May you never find yourself to be in a desperate time of need.

Please let us all know how much your property taxes went down after the home is sold.

If every "savings" outlined in the CGR report were achievable the home would still lose over $3M per year.

Again, why have they ignored the recommendations from the report they commissioned? They could at least attempt to follow them. But let's face it, Edwards wants to close the CCH and will not rest until it is done.
