It is called a DEBT. It is paying on bills we have incurred not any additional spending. I do not know why this concept is so difficult for some members of our Congress (mainly the right wing Tea party) as well as this paper to understand.

The time to complain about how much you owe on your credit card is NOT when the bill comes due. Rather it is when you are making the charges. Can you imagine if we all said.."Gosh charged too much on my credit card during the holidays..so I will not pay the bill" That is what happens if Congress does not increase the debt ceiling. It is NOT on spending. It is paying our bills.

Like the President said We are not a deadbeat Nation. We pay our bills.

Let us all hope that Congress gets it. We cannot afford another drop in our credit rating. Hope this time they understand what a debt is, and what paying our bills means to the credit rating of our entire Country.

Judeye, who ran up the debt hugely ? The Duce Obama . You seem to continually miss facts. Say, did you catch the AR 15 was left in the car at Sandy ?We have a 3rd world news network in this country and Obama is playing it for all he can. What else would we expect from a black democrat, remember tawana bradley, the duke rape and who can forget those black preachers blaming whites for everything. This is like living in Africa or having the inner cities of America with their minority methods p suddenly thrust on the national stage .I would say he is triying to hold the entire nation up, a stick up for money.

Judeye, even democrats are saying big tax increases for middle class coming to feed all the programs the libs love. I am glad you voted for Obama cause I want you and those that did to pay and pay. There is not enough money in the rich so others must pay. get ready libs and watch all those projected decreases in healthcare turn into large increases in costs ! wonderful news eh ?

When Bush became president we had a surplus and they were projecting they could pay off the debt in 10 years. Then Bush lowered taxes, spent billions in two wars that didn't get paid off, and did a medicare drug program, but did not allow the government to negotiate lower prices with the pharmaceutical companies, which was just a big give away to them, which was also not paid for. That is why we have such a large debt. Obama acted responsibly and added those things to the debt. Now I hope John isn't as ignorant as he appears in this editorial, because it sounds like I would be concerned if I hold his mortgage, he may just decide not to pay it. Apparently he thinks that's the way to go.

Here's how STUPID & UNETHICAL the OBSERVER board is:

Only the Congress can approve any spending &/or any budgets. The President doesn't.

This fact is so categorically obvious in the Constitution. The only powers the President has to the budget is to administer the budget as Congress dictates & as Chief Executive, PROPOSE to Congress a budget to of both his wishes and to keep things running. THAT'S IT!! NOTHING MORE! CHECK THE CONSTITUTION!

So, for the OBSERVER Board to say its Obama tax-&-spend is blatant LYING. Only Congress can tax & spend.

The debt ceiling is Congress' fault. The country has bills to pay -- which Congress told Obama by law he had no choice but to spend & now those bills are due. The Treasury says there is "no money in the bank", so we need to borrow $s to pay Congress' bills. So to borrow, we need to increase our credit limit.

The GOP congressmen say "no" to increasing the credit limit, but by law, they still

(con't.)...Obama to spend money, which by law, he is required to do.

So, the GOP Congressmen are deliberately confusing the issue by "requiring" a cut in spending that only they can do. But they are unwilling and unable to cut their own favorite programs, and they know the Democrats are unwilling and unable to cut their programs, so they conveniently blame Obama -- who has by law and practice, zero power to cut spending!

This lying and confusion by the OBSERVER is outright shameful -- but given the caliber of the people on their board, including their publisher, this midget minded intellect and suspect character comes as zero surprise.

Steinerdzzz...its a well documented fact that our biggest economic threats are from and by people exactly like you -- you receive more in social security and medicare than you paid into it -- period.

Every month you receive hundreds more $$S than you were taxed for Social Security. When you die, you will have cost the govt a quarter millions $s in health care, when you only paid tens of thousands.

You are the very problem you despise and are a recipient of the very programs and political philosophies you rant against.

You are your own worst of both your worlds

Obama is Satan himself. If we don't somehow prevent the poor and illegals from voting in 2014 (armed GOP'ers at all polls?) we will be in for more of the same, only worse.

I'm glad that Steiner ignores/forgets the fact that the deficit ballooned when Obama added the cost of Bush's wars to the equation. We can only hope that the rest of the country is as ignorant/forgetful.

DCronig, you failed to mention that Obama hasn't submitted a budget that could pass (even by his own party)in 4+ years. That's what has gotten us into this mess.

When unharnessed spending continues to rise, the more debt you incur. Every working or retired American has a budget that they must abide by to keep from growing their debt, and eventually being unable to pay their creditors. Pretty basic economics. Then again we don't have the luxury of simply printing more money. Wait until the US dollar loses all its value, then you will see real chaos in this country!! Wake up people.

The Prez has zero power to raise the debt ceiling by himself, only Congress can. The Prez is merely as guilty as any member of Congress who agrees w/him.

In contrast, if the Prez was against raising the debt ceiling, yet Congress raised it anyway, I wonder which individual member of Congress the Observer would assign total blame to?

MikeDavis...Do you understand the difference between a debt and future spending?

We cannot just not pay our bills. Well we can, and we can get our credit rating reduced once again (first time in our history..thanks TEA) Do you have any idea what it could do to the markets? to our economy? Just as we are starting to come out of the deep hole we were pushed into..some insist that we go back down.

Gosh I wised they made every congress person take basic economics 101. They just dont seem to get it.

Perhaps now you are seeing what idiots are running the country. Congress won't go against what obama wants. Sure they talk up until the 11th hour. Then congress caves into obamas demands. Why people keep keep voting these idiots in is beyond me. obama keeps giving the money away and congress keeps approving it. Wait it is going to get a lot worse. A lot worse.

Captain...not so sure about that. Many legal scholars think that he indeed does not only have the power to raise the debt ceiling..but might even have an obligation to do so if the Congress fails to do it.

some use the 14th amendment to justify it....some use the concept of 'the necessities of state, and on the president’s role as the ultimate guardian of the constitutional order, charged with taking care that the laws be faithfully executed.'

There has not been a budget in the past four years people. The money being spent has been by continuing resolution! The Senate is supposed to propose a budget but has not been able to do so because of democratic opposition within the senate. By the way is someone twisting the Presidents arm to get him to sign off on the resolutions? Both sides of the aisle are to blame because the money being spent is not from their pocket! That is the simple truth. Term limits are needed. Congress should convene only a couple times a year for a couple of weeks.(unless a national emergency occurs) The rest of the time they should be at home working like the rest of us.

really Robert. If you don't agree with someone block them from having a voice. Or if they have a different opinion say it's because they are white. Isn't that a little racist? You really have no idea how to have a discussion without insults or threats to block the opinion of others, do you?
