Gun owners are not criminals

January 25, 2013

Editor, OBSERVER: I am just an average working guy, like most of you. Not too many things would make me write to the paper. I like to hunt and fish, I own guns and like to shoot the....

Yes, most gun owners are law abiding citizens. But you lose track of the fact that guns can be bought at gun shows and on-line with no background check. This is where a big part of the problem lies. If we close those loopholes I think most of us will be safer. And there are people out there forming militias that I think threaten the security of our country. Between 2006 and 2009 the number of militia groups in our country went from 147 to 512, according to the article here. I find this very disturbing. www-dot-telegraph-dot-co-dot-uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7944563/The-truth-behind-Americas-civilian-militias-dot-html

Observer / parent company, PLEASE get rid of the moronic restrictions on websites. I know you want to prevent spam and whatnot, but ffs! Also, quit the idiotic asterisks that "censor" simple slang terms. Quit being the helicopter parents over your "sensitive" kid. We're all grown-ups here.

Should I be able to sell/give a rifle to a relative/neighbor without the consent of the government?(Yes). How about buying ammo online, buying by the bullet, the box or bulk to save money(why do I need a background check for that?).As far as using the Telegraph for unbiased information,I'd rethink that.I do agree that the security of our country is being threatened but by executive orders and not the people.

Communist ideals take over the simple minds one by one. The more you can be convinced that the state (not necessarily NY) can take care of your needs, the more you should fear their promises. This country was nout founded on the idea that the proletariat can fulfill your dreams. It was the exact opposite. They knew that your dream was no the same as your nieghbor's, and that you need to be able to defend yourself against the state's tyranny, which is currently Andrew Cuomo and Diane Feinstein's main target. YOUR RIGHTS. They are NOT aiming to fight the real problem, which is mental illness, they are going for the low-hanging fruit, which is an easy target (you). Don't be a sucker, show them the error of THEIR ways, which are disarming the populace in order to make you their puppet.

The Marcias, the Judeyes, the Christophers of the world fear change, and they don't like the idea that someone else can have a level opposing opinion of theirs, so they feel threatened that the 2nd amendment come back to haunt them.

Marcia, guns cannot be bought on-line with no background checks. Guns purchases can be made on-line of which the seller through a FFL holder must send the gun to a FFL holder who has to go through the procedures for sale. I just purchased a firearm on-line. The gun was sent to a FFL holder who retains possession of the gun. I then have to fill out the required federal form where the FFL holder calls it in to ATF Instant Check. Once Instant Check gives to "procede", the FFL holder then "sells" it to me for their transfer fee.

FFL...Federal Firearms License

Few people have a problem with just owning guns. I have not seen any legislation that would take guns that are designed for hunting to be taken away or banned.

But Who hunts with a semi automatic rifle? Or with rounds that can fire off many bullets in a very short time? Many of these weapons were specifically designed for COMBAT. To me, in combat is where they should remain, not on our streets.

The background checks that are used in NY should be mandated throughout the USA. Most of the gun owners in our state do not think that their rights were violated or that it was an infringement on their second amendment rights when they went through the background check. Who can be against a background check in order to purchase a gun?

What changes would the gun owners want to see? What do you think would possibly help prevent another mass killing? There is no ONE solution. To me we need to address the increase in gun violence from many directions..including some bans

Many many people hunt with semiautomatic weapons. I use a semiautomatic shot gun and have a semi automatic .22 cal. Most tube fed guns are semiautomatic not just the so called assault rifles. According to this new law in NYS someone can not have a 10 shot magazine but can have a 15 shot capacity tube fed gun. It's all politics and the lead up to much worse things to come. Mass. has a bill on the floor to FORCE all guns to have liability insurance. Which will give the insurance company the right to come into your home to inspect how you store your guns, they will have all the serial numbers and can be forced to hand all that info over to the powers that be. Can anyone say NYS will follow this very liberal state. Why is it you left wing sheep follow so blindly?

"What changes would the gun owners want to see? What do you think would possibly help prevent another mass killing?" There is no changes in any gun laws that will or could have prevented this type of tragedy. Guns and law abiding citizens are not the problem. To try and prevent then you need to start profiling people that show psychotic tendencies and you need to start while they are still in school. Lock a few more away if needed. In the work place some checks need to be put in place to try and spot them. If that had happened in Jamestown maybe this police officer would not have went of the deep end. Is there any one answer, of course not. Taking away any type of legal weapon will not help one bit. Does anyone really believe that by making a 10 shot magazine illegal and only allowing 7 will make one iota of difference to the criminal or the psychotics' that do this sort of thing?

My problem with this piece of feel good legislation is that it does nothing to prevent the next mass killing, and make no mistake, there will be another one. What then? Go after those legally owned weapons and ban them? Removiing weapons from free men is not an easy task. It's best done in steps until the weapons they still have are ineffectual. Welcome to step one. Those of you appaulding please ask yourself this. What would the founding fathers have felt had England taken their weapons to "keep them safe"? Still feel like cheering?

Let's ban the weapons used in 35 mass murders in the country since 1982. All of them, wether owned by law abiding citizens or not. That will put a final and telling stop to all mass murders in America and we can all feel safer. Is that what I am supposed to believe? There have been 142 mass murders in this country since 1982. In 35 there was an assualt rifle used. And one of those in erroneous. Sandy Hook was not an assualt weapon massacre. The assault weapon was found in the car. The truth is these weapons are used in less than 25 percent of the mass murders. So once these are banned and there is another two or three mass murders what then? We ban those weapoons? Until we have sticks and stones? The truth is the only way stop a maniac is to either lock them up or treat their mental illness before they do the deed they think will make them infamous. Name one thing that has been banned that millions of people want that wasn't available for a higher price after the ban. Just one.

I am a legal gun owner in NY and I too am tired of being thought of a criminal or will become a criminal in the future by owning guns. This law was pushed through with lies and misinformation the law makers in Albany are the real criminals. Does anyone know how many deaths were caused by rifles in NY in 2011 a total of 5 and what the media call assault rifles are a mere percentage of the rifles owned in NY and how does a thumb hole in a stock cause the weapon to be banned under this new stupid law. MY last ***** the 2nd amendment is not about HUNTING it never was.

Marcia, what web site was that? That will direct ship a weapon to a home address? With no background check. I can think of a few million people that would really like that information. And they aren't even criminals, according to the governemnt, yet.

American, because Judeye doesn't use an AR-15 for hunting, then you should not be able to at all. That's the way the left feels. They know what's good for you more than you do, and know you better than you do, yourself.

According to Joe Biden, all you need to hunt or defend yourself is a double-barrel shotgun. Really, now we're gong from seven rounds to TWO?! Ffs, how can this ignoramus/retard occupy the vice presidency with idiotic, delusional, not to mention downright dangerous statements like that? What the left will do to make a police state.

"James Agenbroad, 78, of Garrett Park, Md., carried a handwritten sign on cardboard that read "Repeal the 2nd Amendment." He called it the only way to stop mass killings because he thinks the Supreme Court will strike down any other restrictions on guns. "You can repeal it," he said. "We repealed prohibition." Don't try to tell me they are not after all of our guns. ht tp:// m/thousands-march-gun-control-washington-164306917.html

Judeye, just because you believe anybody hunts with a semi-automatic, doesn’t mean they don’t. Besides, once the semi-automatics are outlawed, then what about those sniper rifles and street sweeper riot control guns?

Back in the 80’s, the Cost Guard found out something interesting concerning prisoners they captured in the Caribbean smuggling drugs. They discovered that when the Coastguardsmen held them with M-16’s, the prisoners were boisterous and difficult to control. But, when they held them with pump shotguns, the prisoners were very docile and compliant. It seemed there was something about having a gun that will cut you in half pointed at you. Soon, you’ll asking why anybody needs a street sweeper riot control shotgun

Put a scope on an AR-10 flat top, pop a five round mag in it and you have an EXCELLENT, top of the line, deer rifle; and until last week it was completely legal to hunt with. Tell me how that rifle is functionally differant than say either a Remington 742 Woodmaster or a Winchester 100 in .308? This past deer season I most fortunate in obtaining a vintage Ruger Deerfield (44 mag). I found it to be just the ticket for that close range brush work in the creek bottoms.

Stang, the shotgun is the left's next "assault rifle". That will be the Next Big Thing that "who hunts with a shotgun?", especially since Not-So-Feinstein has not one effing clue wtf she's talking about, yet the left votes her in time and time again. It's so ironic that the left calls itself "progressive" insinuating that they are all for your right to choose, and for your right to live free. That is, until you oppose their view, then all of a sudden, you're Public Enemy #1. Than, you, lefties, for making me more vulnerable to lawbreakers that you so want to keep alive at my expense for no reason, but won't hesitate to kill an unborn at a second's notice. You are a testament to your kind.

Kcw, the left is too occupied its their own legerdemain to try to use logic. Nevermind that many people engage themselves with guns the way the American people love cars, gardening, football, or any other activity. Because the left is so afraid, paranoid, and arrogant, they cannot see that all people are truly different, and do have the ability to think for themselves, and can't let freedom of thought be. You are an independent thinker, and thus must be stopped.

I am not like you, nor do I ever desire to be , ever.thank you, lefties, for making non-American Piers Morgan an authority for you.
