What is our future with drones?

February 23, 2013

There is a movement under way in this country called unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly called drones. Some are very large, some tiny, and some can fly sideways and backwards....

Margaret, you never let us down. Even as a senior citizen, you are more informed than most. I agree that this is a slippery slope, and we must proceed very carefully. I do not think our government should be spying on us. And, as much as I have supported the President, I think he has overused the drones in war areas. He should have to go to a FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court) to get permission before killing targets. It's what we said about Bush, and still stands today.

Drones are already being used by law enforcement, surveyors, oil companies, urban planners, etc. in this country...so the future is already here.

Wait a minute there folks!! Using drones for Military targets is one thing. Using them to spy on citizens within our borders is another thing entirely. The first example I am highly supportive of, the second, no way. And as for you Dcronlg, the ACLU is a bogus group of useless individuals who only seem interested in fighting about Christmas displays. In the "old days", they actually defended the Constitution and even individuals being taken advantage of. They're now a joke.

Drones are a logical evolution of progress which began when the draft ended. People did not want to go to war or send their sons and daughters into battle so we went to an all-volunteer military. After two simultaneous wars, Americans again got tired of seeing (or not seeing) dead soldiers returned to stateside air bases, so we supported getting out and not putting our kids in harm's way. Drones just made sense, and although I have reservations, they seem better than having our young men and women killed. A good trade-off, I'd say. As far as Had Enough saying all this has taken place because Obama won a second term, that is just a hater talk as these things were all in progress long before Obama became a political figure.

Ms Valone-love reading your articles. Just a bit of info for you if I may. While the State is not currently using drones to my knowledge the Air Force is out of Hancock Field.(Syracuse)They routinely use the Fort Drum(Watertown)range and the facilities at Wheeler-Sack airfield there. The drone is the MQ9 Reaper.Being a retired member of the 10th Mountain Division I visit Ft Drum and have seen them operating out of there. I have mixed feelings about the use. Taking out bad guys without exposing the good guys to danger I support 100%. It isn't fun getting shot at trust me. Looking for lost people and other rescue operations as well is good. Then we get into the gray areas and that gets tricky and thus I fully understand your concerns. Keep up the wonderful articles Margaret.

Maggie, does everything have to be frightening or about money ? we have had spy satellites for years with good pix. Now we have a way to attack people with no risk of reprisal except maybe a shot down drone. This is one area i support obama ! Blow them away !It is better than waterboarding, thats torture ! We have red light cameras, cell phone cameras, police cameras, cameras everywhere . On the southern border, i have seen illegals crossing the border, carrying assault weapons. All filmed by citizens. We can now attack terrorists where they sleep ! Have a nice day jihadists !gee, a Fox commentator was quoted and not even in derison. It is a video game now, technology, ya gotta love it no ?

Oh ya one more thing. The placing of transponders in your vehicles will insure that your whereabouts is known at all times. So keep those cars away from your girlfriends house.

The future of drones is quite frankly this. They will be used to spy on the American people. The government is already using your credit card transactions to see where you go and what you spend. Add to this the monitoring of the internet and you can see that America is heading towards being a socialist state. Thank you all for making this happen by voting Obama in for a second term.

Well, then, Margaret -- as you are so very vocally concerned about the erosion of and threat to our civil liberties, I understand the American Civil Liberties Union -- the ACLU -- is always looking for new members.

Fancy yourself as a card-carrying member of the ACLU? You should, if you truly, truly believe in what you said.
