I'd say after 20 yrs of service Vinny earned every penny of his salary. Corrections officers risk their life everyday. Yes, at times they may have "down time" but don't all jobs? Seriously, the cuts should be made at the prisoner level and at the Superintendent levels, not the correction officer level.

In order to maintain the current level of safety, I would hope that the prison system employees would offer to take a “real” pay cut in order maintain current staffing while decreasing the overall cost. And by “real” I mean don’t take it out of the hourly rate then add it back in as a lump sum “seniority” payment or add it into retirement benefits.

Not only that, but the work, at least at the non-max facilities, is not too hard. I.e. the. Guards play poker on shift.

State employees cost taxpayers far more than the employee’s salaries. The cost of benefits and retirements significantly increase the cost to taxpayers. It is the total cost of employees that taxpayers should be concerned about, not just take-home pay.
