Mr. Cerne is headed in the right direction but does not go far enough. There is no justification for two separate school districts in Dunkirk and Fredonia. Together the two districts would have about 3700 students. That compares with over 5000 in the Jamestown districts. So, why should we pay for the duplication of all those services especially when the two communities are geographically joined at the hip? Please don't tell me that a merger is not legally possible because it is. The reality is that our area has a declining tax base and if NRG goes gown the tubes the party will be over. It's time to face the financial realities that we are confronted with.

We really need leaders with vision at this point, and if we look ten years down the road, there aren't going to be 3,700 students in a combined D&F High School. When the mass exodus completes itself, we will be lucky to have a combined high school with the enrollment of either one currently. It is time, I'm afraid, even if Al Stuhmiller and Roger Moore are spinning in their graves, the rivals must come together to make for the good of the area.

The entire County of Chautauqua better think about merging....govt, schools everything possible. As to the mass exodus....how will property owners be able to sell their homes. There will be no on to buy. They best start thinking about survival and quickly!!!!

The opinions here totally contradict what Jan Murray, exec member of the Chat Co Board of Realtors, said in an Observer article on 2/19.
