There has been lots of talk recently at both the state and federal levels of a minimum wage....

Well this is America. If we want to give aportion of out money to the poor go ahead. One ATTABOY to Gates et. al. However who is the smartest person who can say: "They make too much"? You can go out and make too much also. Opportunity is now here NOT Opportunity is nowhere. Raise the minimum wage all you want. It still be the minimum wage. Johnson's War on Poverty has not worked so far. Gates made his money during that time. WHY?

Judeye, the problem is what you want us to move towards is what many European countries are now trying to get away from…Socialism. You can deny it all you want but your comments these past few years all lean towards your love of Socialism. Even Russia has warned the US about moving towards Socialism. Socialism is what brought the former Soviet Union to its knees and led to its downfall. If you ever studied Communism, you would know that Communism cannot be achieved until full Socialism is achieved first.

As far as the income of the super rich goes; I could care less. What does that have to do with you or me how much money they have or make? The only ones who really care about it are those who thrive on class envy. Matter-of-fact, I hope a Bill Gates builds another multimillion dollar mansion as he will provide hundreds of jobs to Americans in the process. Have you or I directly provided anyone a job lately?

stangv8...because America is my home..and I love my Country.

Trying to make it better in no way implies that I have less of a love for it than those who just want things to remain as they are. In fact, I could argue those of us who are helping to move our country love it more than those who wish to see it remain stagnant or even go backwards. We are..and always have been a progressive..forward moving country.

Why is the income of the super rich going up while the income of the rest of us is going down? Have you looked into this? Read anything on it? Truly then what do you think..and do you think a democracy can survive if most of the wealth is concentrated in a few at the very top?

How does keeping people poor allow the rich increase their wealth? The rich get richer by producing goods and services for people to purchase, thus increasing their wealth. If the poor only get poorer, they don’t have the money to purchase the goods and services produced by the wealthy and thus, the wealthy don’t increase their wealth. I mean, the CEO of Ford doesn’t get richer when people buy basic versions of his Ford F-150. He increases his wealth when people buy fully loaded 4X4 F-150’s and to make sure they continue buying those trucks, he does all her can to ensure they have good paying jobs

Judeye, you’re always pointing how much better Europe is than the US in taxes, healthcare, salary caps, etc. If you believed it was so much better when you lived there, why didn’t you stay there? I mean, you were already in country so the biggest part was done. Why did you come back here only to complain about how bad America is and how it needs to be like Europe? Our European ancestors came here to get away from that system and now you want us to go back to it.

BTW Judeye, Switzerland still issues all its adult males a Sig550 fully automatic rifle capable of firing 700 rounds per minute. Now, that’s one thing about Switzerland I wish America would adopt.

I might add, since we're so into statistics, that the top 20% economically in this country own 89% of the total wealth. My, my, what a surprise that they pay the most taxes. (the top 1% own 35.4%) that leaves just 11% of the wealth for the other 80% of the country. Wow, what a surprise they pay less taxes! As for percentage of ALL taxes, sales, property, etc., etc., NOT just income taxes, the top 1% pay the least relative to % of income. You want more? From 1990 to 2005 Executive pay increased 289%. Their workers increased by 4.3%, losing ground to inflation. Yep, Go Republicans!!!

But the ethusiastic crowd of "workers" cheered every social program and talking point the guy brought up. Then he sailed off to a fifty thousand dollar a plate dinner....yeah, that's of, for, and by the people. As I've said several times on these threads, the system is broken. We only count at election time. Other than that we are a minor inconveience for the political class.

Oh goodie Judeye lets follow the European model and see how well that does for everyone. Are you serious? The people with the power in this country have it one of two ways. They are elected to it and then do any and everything they can to hold onto it. Why? Because the real power in this country is money, and the politicians get a boatload of it from the wealthy to leave them alone. The chances of something like this happening are slim and none. Stockholders can vote to limit compensation but don't because the dividend and stock prices would suddenly drop. It's just like that Of, for and by governement you think you have. You nor I have the money it takes to be one of those people. Don't believe me? Try and see your hero without a 15 to 50 thousand dollar "donation" in your hand. Obama came to visit where I work while on the campaign trail last year. Everyone was told to take the day off, we couldn't come in to earn our wages if we wanted to!!

joew..not trying to compare them at all. Only pointed out that some countries have in fact enacted laws to limit the pay of CEO..or as Dan stated in his article...maximum pay.

What do you think of the income disparity in our country? How would you try to reduce the gap? Or do you think that it is good that the rich are getting MUCH richer..and many in the middle class are being pushed down into poverty?

Judeye-may I also point out that the Swiss Government(by law)and approved by voters can not spend more than the revenue trend line.(that means they can't spend more than they take in) It is called the "debt brake"!(Psssst, that's what Paul Ryans budget entails by the way!) Also the ten tax brackets in Switzerland go from 0.0% up to the maximum of 13%.

Judeye-since you are attempting to compare the US with Switzerland I have to ask you why Dunkirk/Fredonia is not doing as well as Dallas/Fort Worth?

judeye sounds like wonder woman, fending off all these supposed threats to democracy. her list of threats is endless. they can only be cured by govt intervention. Now the biggest threat to our cities is public employee benefit costs. But that is ok cuz these are democrats ! Illinois is in trouble because of this. Judeye , what do you propose a tax increase ? The biggest increaser of wealth has been the capitalist system, judeye does not understand that. She thinks it is women and govt. Diversity too. The govt was caught unawares of the huge capitalist explosion, led by men and their inventions. wealth and the std of living increased hugely.Women like Ida Tarbell, sanger, nation, etc could only wreck it. they did not understand money, science or invention. right libs ? Judye, when is the end ? Christopher ? Is the govt our saviour . I say no way. It will be scientific men, like myself, uhoh, narcissism again.facts libs, not hatred.

jaycee..ha ha...I already have lived there!

It seems like too many here have never been outside of CC so their views are limited to only what they see right here.

Meanwhile I continue to ask...what country practices democracy and yet has the bulk of its wealth concentrated in the hands of a few at the very top?

The gap and disparity in wealth and income in our country is a very real threat to our very democracy.

christopher gets it wrong again. Cognitive disorder. The rich pay huge amounts in taxes. Poor people by definition do not. Even Cuomo said that when the housing bubble broke, billions in taxes from Wall street people evaporated. Christopher does not understand basic economics. They want to raise minimum wage to unskilled workers and tax the hades out of the people making the jobs happen. thats why i call them, the dumbocrats. They get almost everything backwards. Christopher, it is fun to read the union, democratic, get it wrong but think you are right comments. For proof, look at the inner cities , or even detroit. Union and democratic, going bust. Nice going libs. Take a way rich men and we are back to the stone age. women would be gathering berries in together moments. Long live rich people.

I would comment and say how much I agree with judeye and Christopher except for two little things. 1)Christopher hates my user ID and 2)I would be totally lying. The rest of yoy keep up the great comments.

Really??? Now we're going to start with the "fair share" fallacy? Please! From the IRS' own statistics, the rich pay the bulk of the taxes. As of 2010, the top 1% of income earners pay 37% of taxes. The top 5% of earners pay 59% of all taxes. The top 25% of earners pay 87% of all taxes and the top 50% of earners pay 97.6% of all taxes. Conversely, that means that the bottom 50% of earners, combined, only pay 2.4% of all taxes. Many in this group actually pay "negative taxes" meaning they are actually taking money vs paying taxes. Fair share is a fallacy and those with no "skin in the game" have no right to take from those that do. And to the writer, this is a free country, whether you view their expenditures as "wasted money" it is money that is now circulating in the economy. Everyone who cooked and served the $40 cheeseburger are now getting a paycheck. That's how an economy works.

It's simple, in the Republican/Conservative world, "spreading the wealth" means making poor people pay more in taxes and the rich pay MUCH less. That's their tax reform, in a nutshell.

Judeye, gets it wrong again. Judeye, is there anything you do not want to control ? How about inventing something rather than telling others how much they can make ? Another threat to democracy ? lets see, global warming, guns, chemicals, soft drinks, fracking , .Judeye, when is the end? endless doom from judeye. You remind me of that woman activists blaming a 40 yr old chemical spill for twitching teenage girls in Leroy.. Get a reality check judeye, the govt telling people how much they could make is good ? we need a contest, like was done in europe that rewards people with tax free money for coming up with usefull things. Judeye, when, in your liberal opinion , is the end, the end !Thats why libs need other peoples money, judeye, you have not posted anything about the influence of women on the world. enlighten us ! All them science achievments by gals.I want the era of std oil back. A democrat approaches John D for $. John says, get lost dumbacrat ! that would would be great eh

"I'm sometimes tempted to ask why not a maximum wage, but I freely acknowledge in our system that is nonsense."

Oh but look Switzerland just did exactly that!!!

"Swiss citizens voted Sunday to impose some of the world’s most severe restrictions on executive compensation, ignoring a warning from the business lobby that such curbs would undermine the country’s investor-friendly image."

and..."On Thursday, the European Parliament agreed to limit bonuses of bankers to two times their salaries."

We could..we SHOULD limit the outrageous pay for those at the very top at the expense of those in the middle.

NO it has not always been this way. Look up income gap in USA to see just how large that gap has grown in the past two decades. Not only is it immoral, unfair, unjust.. it is a direct threat to our democracy.

Dan, i was almost weeping. All the things or rather govt programs we could have , solving our problems with other peoples money. You forgot John rockefeller, STD oil founder, another idol of mine, posters. He helped eradicate hookworm in the south. Richest man in America. Oil is great. But those dixiecrats, like now were not too smart.Living off the land ,getting hookworm, going green. Say Dan, I like the parable of the talents, people were rewarded for their ability . But the libs say , you did not build that. Just think of all the money or lack of it for the unfunded obligatioins for our public employees. Think of what taxpayers could do with that. If not for rich men and their inventions or business, we would not have much.
