There are already 6 full time firefighters and 2 part-time, the reporter should clarify that!

Fredonia is doing the right thing. President-elect Romney alluded to the fact that FEMA is an immoral agency, and he was right. Too bad the liberals stole, defrauded and suppressed their way into yet another election "victory", otherwise FEMA would be gone by now.

Good job Fredonia Board. I don't think Fredonia needs 16 full time paid firefighters. For once they looked ahead. We all know when the grant was over they would not be fired.

With some of the highest paid employees in the county Im glad they are not adding more peple to sit around. Why do you need a pumper and a ladder truck a a home when someone is just sick?

Spoken like a true fireman. Give me a break. Sixteen firemen direct the future of Fredonia. I can't stop laughing.

Hey wiseup a pumper and a ladder truck helps lower your home owners fire insurance ratings ISO ratings dictate what type and how many of trucks that your community needs. Get the facts straight before you comment

So the article is saying that the Fire Dept currently IS NOT meeting federal standards and this grant would have got them in compliance... And these 9 firefighters wouldn't have to be retained after 2 years... So our board could have brought 9 good jobs to this area for at least 2 years (salary and benefits paid for as per the article) and brought us into compliance with standards, however chose not to. So is the current Village gov't going on record as being against job creation in this area and against public safety??? And before anyone says this would have cost us more money in the long run, remember that the Village did not have to maintain all of the positions. Seems to be ignorance and negligence rolled into one.

Fredonia is in compliance, for a fire you need 2 in and 2 out with scba's. They get that within 10 minutes of the alarm.

obamaless, I am not a fireman, my cousin is and he is active, he says that for a fire there are people who respond, not so much for rescue calls!

Ok, I am an active Fredonia Firefighter and most of the views/comments above are incorrect or spoken out of ignorance. Baseball is correct there are 6 Full time and 2 part-time paid Firefighters. Wiseup, You have no clue, as no Pumper or Ladder truck responds to a home EMS call in Fredonia unless it is a Third call and both rescue trucks are already busy. Commentor, You need to see the forest through the trees! Do the math man, 60K to train and outfit 9 Firefighters Fully paid salary and bennifits by the grant for 2 years or now, like the Mayor states hire 2 at a cost of about 150K annually and hope we can still accomplish transporting. I'd say it's time to get the horses in front of the cart and get the manpower we need in place to do the transporting and bring in $350-$400K per year!! It is true that when we have an actual fire we usually get manpower but, do you really want it to be your house and your kids inside while we wait for 2 in and 2 out to meet NFPA guidelines.

Have you ever been the first one at a house fire? 10 minutes is an eternity. It is just a national problem as fewer and fewer people are Volunteering and we need all we can get, if for nothing more than safety. We may not have been able to keep all 9 from the grant but we all would have understood giving it a try and needing to produce revenue to keep 5 or 6. Please, I welcome all of you to come to the Fire Station, see what it's all about and to join as a Volunteer. It's time to put your efforts where your mouth or keyboard are!!

Let's do the math...the Mayor said 2 firefighter cost 150k so 4 cost 300k,6 cost 450k, 8 cost 600k and 9 cost 675k. That's what it will cost taxpayers after two years when they are all unioned up and can't be let go.

Sorry Commentor, you are not correct as everyone going in knew the possibility that we may not be able to keep all 9. I know as I was present and read the letter from the union! This was meant to benefit Fredonia not to put an undue burden on tax payers in two years. Also, would you like an application we could use your help!
