Hey Richard, who has not noticedd the bicyclists on the roads. They think they are invincible. well, when you are training for something, saving the planet or reducing our health insurance rates with every pedal stroke , thats all the protection you need. Unlicened California drivers cars not impounded ? They cant be if they are illegals as these are potential democratic voters. better to go after law abiding gun owners. Polls show they are mostly caucasian anyways. Fun reading Mr. Westlund.

Nice read, EXCEPT for your bit about the cyclists. Nothing worse than having an oblivious individual on a bike headed AT YOU in YOUR LANE. At least if they travel LEGALLY with traffic you can slow and pass when safe. If they come at you, even if you come to a complete stop, the cyclist is still getting closer to you.

The responsible riders are paying attention to cars and following the laws of the road. Just as there are a minority of idiots driving cars, there's a minority of idiots on bicycles... around here they tend to look like the immigrant types - maybe the police can impound their Huffy's!

Westlund, taking a trip or two away from Collins, NY, -- WNY for that matter -- for a very extended period of time would do you and your Fox-News-fed pedestrian perception, a world of good.

It would certainly go a long way towards curing your self-admitted "miscellaneous unrelated thoughts."

Reading this column today I felt as though I was in some sort of time warp. The last time I had a phone with a cord was in the 80's. I then moved to a cordless phone in the 90's and recently ended my land line contract with AT&T because of their ridiculous price gauging. As far as bicyclists, those funny helmets have been around for twenty years and the humor has subsided. In my city we have bicycle routes where cyclists are allowed to ride in the painted part of the side of the road; really, no problem anymore. I don't know what to say about the illegals except to say you don't need a license to drive.

Believe it or (k)not, scientists have studied tangling of telephone cords.

The propagation of telephone cord buckles is more complex than that of other buckling shapes. At some point, the propagation front begins to rotate, typically from asymmetrical lifting and replacing of the receiver. The rotating buckle sags slightly, and the sagging is followed by a change in the rotation direction.

These steps repeat, the telephone cord buckling grows. In non-linear instances like this, various solutions may coexist under the same conditions, and the same kind of compressive loadings leads to the different types of buckles.

However, a first parameter affecting the morphology is possible stress asymmetry in the plane, while details in the interface energy will also affect buckle/tangle patterns.

Now we know...

Dc, You have anger and empathy issues that Freud and Jung couldn't help you with after decades of therapy. Do the commentary section, and all here, a favor and just leave. Your reply isn't a comment, it's a verbal attack. You sad little person...

MikeDavis,

I completely agree. DC is actually starting to make Steiner seem reasonable, on topic and polite.

And you think yourself clever but all you are is sad, Dc. You seem mentally locked in at about the third grade level. Is that when girls first laughed at you? Creating the pathetic little man you have become? Poor little Dc, if you could have only matured normally, instead of the stunted, mentally anguished existence you live, other people might have let you socialize with them. But not now, not with your qualities. Or should I say lack thereof? Keep reaching Dc, one day an intelligent thought might magically pop into your head.

MikeDavis,

Don't stoop to his level, firstly it will only encourage him and secondly it makes you look bad.

Basically it boils down to "Don't feed the trolls."

Speaking of trolls, has anyone gotten over their erroneous belief that the killer of the school children in Connecticut DIDN'T use the Ar015 style Bushmaster in his murderous rampage? Since I saw several posters on here who were making that claim fairly recently. I mean, it IS random thoughts, right? In many case, Mr. Westlund is correct on bicyclists, many, many of them conduct themselves like idiots on the roadways.(Yes, I know, so do many drivers of motor vehicles) Places with Bicycle lanes are one thing, we don't have them. I would LOVE to see a scenario where there were widened roads for bicycles. Where's the money coming from? The racist comments about bikes was typical of the political mindset of the writer.

Christopher, I'm going to have to assume you are the "disagree" with my post. However, not only is Westlund off-base on cyclists, he's advocating illegal action by advising to ride against traffic. And he mentioned country roads - this area is great for cycling whether by pedal or motor, country roads with little traffic. @Steiner - he said nothing about cycling on "highways" - that would be insane, and illegal as well. And @Christopher, I made the parting shot about immigrant-looking bicyle riders here in town as a dig at Westlund - it clearly didn't come across well.

Paul, I don't consider myself a troll but I'm still not convinced of the use of the AR15. Point blank all they need to do to verify it is release the video of the guy coming into the school with it. The security system the school has would provide this. And no I do NOT want to see any on the violence, but if he did carry that in it would be plainly visible. The reason for my doubt is the many people that said there was no assault rifle found in the school. But after pushing to get the bans in place, and meeting huge resistance, suddenly it was "re-reported" that there was an AR15 found in the school. I don't trust politicians any farther than I can throw them. Obama said the healthcare plan was a good thing. Only now is the true cost to working people being assessed and reported. It will be a financial burden about equal to a house payment for most families. And where is his promised "transparency" with his administration?

Mike Davis, if you still have doubts as to Lanza's use of the Bushmaster, that says so much about you and what you're about, and clearly puts you into a category of a zealot.I guess the police are lying, everybody is lying, because nobody will show you a picture. Wow, I'm impressed. That sort of refusal to accept reality puts you into almost the same category as Lanza. It also places you squarely into the thick of a lot of right wing individuals who routinely pass totally fabricated lies throughout the internet and call it political discussion. Unbelievable. It explains your obsession with the Government coming to take your guns away.

PR24601, "I made the parting shot about immigrant-looking bicyle riders here in town as a dig at Westlund - it clearly didn't come across well." I thought it came across quite clearly, or you wouldn't have used it as a "dig at Westlund".

Oh, and Mike, do you think maybe, JUST MAYBE, the police don't want to show pictures of just how Lanza shot his way into the school so as not to encourage the NEXT nutcase with a gun out there? From what I read, he shot a doorway for himself through a window. I'd say they probably don't want to advertise that nationwide. Yep, no doubt, a conspiracy by every policeman involved, no doubt.

Christopher,

The problem is that for days the FBI and local police reported that the rifle was in his car and only pistols were used and then suddenly changed their story.

So my question is, were those making the initial reports from these agencies absolutely clueless, or was the story changed to support a political agenda?

We aren't talking about a simple misunderstanding such as what room the weapon was found in, but a complete reversal of if the weapon even entered the building.

Paul, I have told you several times, I don't own a long gun. I'm not worried about the weapons. I'm worried about the RIGHTS given all Americans being curbed, carved, and finally rescinded. I'll ask again, how exactly is doing any of these things making anyone safer?

Darkstar, make sure you leave your tinfoil hat on! Not going to argue, Mike. If you can't see how seriously limiting what weapons are available, how many and who has access, I just don't know what to say.

Paul, my question is how will any of the new laws make you any safer. When is the last time you heard of a criminal agreeing to a background check? Or worrying if the weapon he was using in commission of his crime was legal or not? But you just want to admit the answer in a big, fat nothing. Yet curbing one of the cornerstone amendments to the Constitution is fine with you? And don't be so condescending, you are better than that. Darkstar brought up valid points about the curious change of what was found where and when, yet you tell him to keep the tin foil hat on?

No, he did not! The NEWS was reporting all the misinformation, all from people who were not there! The locals were saying nothing! Now, saying nothing may have been less than smart, but nobody officially said anything, it was all "I heard" kinds of things. From start to finish it was said he used the Bushmaster. It was only a few reports in between that called that into question, and much of that from very slanted pro-gun folks, hate to say. The details since leave no doubt what weapon he used. As for criminals and such following gun laws, that's true, but all the gun people fight each and every effort to thwart the bad guys, such as forcing checks on private sales, and at gun shows. It doesn't do a bit of good to do it state by state either. I have also advocated for mandatory 20 year sentences in addition to any other sentence for any crime committed with a gun. So, 15 for manslaughter becomes 15 plus 20, etc., no plea, no sentence reduction. But you have to start somewher

..repeat, the gun lobby has even fought background checks for private sales. Don't complain about criminals with guns while doing everything you can to fight efforts to make it harder for them to get one. Yes, that qualifies for tinfoil hat status in my book. And I repeat, I listened to the same news, and knew for 100% certainty that Lanza had done his slaughter with that Bushmaster very early on. Funny how only the hardest of the hardcore 2nd amendment people seemed to have an issue with that.
