I understand "taking care of your own" and offering coaching positions to staff. This should be done if the staff person is qualified for the job. School officials are always quoted in the paper talking about how they do everything with the best interest of the students in mind etc... As a parent, I would rather have my child coached by a qualifed coach, regardless of where they work. If both are equally qualified and one is a teacher, by all means offer it to the teacher. Otherwise, it should go to the candidate who is most qualified.

Bingo. But it's not about the kids in NYS education - you should know that. I personally know a few teachers who have held long-standing coaching appointments who are at best mediocre "teachers" of their sports. Why do they keep it? Their pensions are calculted based on their total income, so they'll retire with higher pensions. In the one case, the teacher receives an extra $8K/yr for coaching at the varsity level.

If you want your child to truly succeed in their athletic endeavors, you must enroll them into club sports, which of course are expensive and time-intensive. Then take your HS season with a grain of salt as many club coaches can coach circles around the HS coaches. Not all, but many.

But the Conti's think that they rule over everyone! As for football, Marshal is very qualified, he does a good job in conditioning, that's why Fredonia is always strong in the 4th. quarter! These freshman players still want to suckle from their midget league coach, grow up and move on!

@ baseball. I agree that Marshall is a good coach, and a very qualified one at that. I disagree with your comment regarding the Conti's. Ross and Alex have both coached my children and are wonderful coaches. I don't understand why the JV kids were upset about who got hired as varsity coach. They all still have a few years to go before being coached by Marshall (and when they do they should be thankful). Bertrando is another great coach and the JV players are going to be fine in his hands. The JV's previous midget league coach could have been considered as an assistant as he has a wealth of knowledge to provide and according to the article it sounds like the school did fill those positions externally.

Most teachers take the job for the money. A lot are poor coaches. A lot are nasty coaches but there seems to be no accountability. They should have to meet certain standards for the sport to coach. As for being for the children that is just plain and simple BS!!!!

Momof3, I have seen the Conti's in action, not going to say anymore. As far as Marshall, he is a very good coach, and he is NOT a school teacher at Fredonia, his assistant Tim Wright is a teacher and he is another very good coach.I don't know the other two, the JV coaches are both quality coaches. I believe that this coaching crew will get the most from their players and they will have them ready for games and will continue the success that Fredonia has had recently in Football!

@baseball. I respect your opinion. I just know that my children had good experiences with them. Tim Wright will be a great assistant coach and I'm happy he's having the opportunity to coach the high school team. I have a feeling we will be seeing some great things happen with Fredonia Football.
