Overall, this is correct and a gap exists, but there’s no “apples to apples" comparison here.

The Department of Labor merely compares the earnings of men/women termed “full-time workers,” i.e., the statistics do not compare co-workers in the same job class with the same time in grade or working the same number of hours per week.

The DOL statistics underlying the wage gap do not account for factors like (a) number of hours worked, (b) the industry they're in, (c) years of experience, (d) education, (e) tenure/seniority, etc.

When such information is taken into account, the wage gap shrinks, and in some cases even reverses (according to the Independent Women’s Forum).

Interestingly, the same premise holds true for the current White House. There is a gender wage gap and female staffers earn less than males when averaged as a group. But, again, the above factors are not weighed.

Just a follow-on comment...and I’m sure most large companies are like this.

When I hire someone, I select the candidate but leave the job offer up to HR/Recruiting. There’s a pay band – high, low, median, mean – and it’s up to the candidate to use his/her negotiating skills to get the best possible offer. I don’t know what the new-hire’s base salary is inside that range until I’m notified the candidate has accepted the offer.

Just to throw gasoline on the fire, I saw a study today indicating that for those working 30-35 hrs/week, women earn 104% the wages of men. So the “general claim” of gender wage differential need greater granularity and “apples to apples” comparisons - - rather than broad, sweeping statements.

Leadership is needed to fix this and this leadership needs to start with the President and Congress. Both who pay their female staffers less than their male counterparts. Yes, even those touting that Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act were they themselves paying their female staffers less and that includes POTUS.
