Another salute for Home

May 4, 2013

Editor, OBSERVER: I just read the commentary written by Dan Wollaston on the Chautauqua County Home (April 28). Every word is true. I just came home after being there for four weeks....

No one argues the quality of care at the Home. The problem is being supported by tax payer dollars. That said I believe you can all put away the issue of selling the Home. The Democratic candidate that will run for Cty Ex will have as his main campaign issue that he will NOT sell the Cty Home and this will guarantee his election. Just my prediction.

If any candidate guarantees that the CCH will not be sold, that will be their downfall. About 70% of the voters in Chauatauqua county want the CCH sold.

We need jobs and an improved economy. We also need to improve our welfare to work participation rate! (Welfare is 80% of the budget). Finding more experienced people who will to do the job will bean important issue too. It doesn't all begin and end with the county home. To sell or not to sell is a distraction.

When you don't make more on welfare than you do by working you might lower the number of people on welfare. As for welfare to work they are still paid by welfare. No one will tackle welfare reform. Welfare is going to get bigger and bigger. 70% want cty home sold. I don't know where you get your facts from but I would hope you are correct. If you are correct then I guess the legislators are not voting according to the will of the people who elected them.

Carlaw,

I'd take it a step further and say that as long as we have people on welfare we should be able to save on other areas.

For example, why pay to have people clean the parks, city/town/village grounds and buildings when we can put welfare recipients to work to earn their benifits?

Commentor, do you know how much a family on welfare has to live on? If you don't know that information then I would suggest you enlighten yourself or better yet I would like to see you live on what a family of 4 gets. The vast majority of people receiving benefits would love to have a job that would support their families. You want reform, it will only come when the jobs are there. Talk to Mr. Edwards and Mr. Daily about that. Instead of putting all their effort to get the CCH sold maybe they should be looking at how to expand and bring business into the county.
