Defining a ‘public employee’

June 17, 2013

What exactly is a “public employee” and when and why did that get to such a negative thing to so many people? In my youth, a so-called “Civil Service Job” was a real plum, something to be proud of....

Most public services are needed, even appreciated, but the high costs associated with these services is killing us! Do you see any connection between high-taxed areas and their decline in population & business?

I resent being reminded about how valuable clean drinking water is, or asked if we like having our streets snow plowed or maintained, having rubbish collected, or what it'd be like w/o police & fire protection, etc. We do value these services, but at a reasonable cost! We should not be expected to accept this "you get what you pay for" attitude by staunch public employee advocates who quickly defend these costs for obvious reasons.

Areas that don't introduce meaningful reform against unsustainable public service costs will keep destroying places that were once a nice, and affordable, place to live.

Well joew you must say they are consistent. If it's not Bushes fault then it has to be Reagans. You ever notice how according to some a democrat president has done nothing wrong?

Paul asks: "...when and why did (public employees) get to (be) such a negative thing?..."

Personally, I started feeling this way AFTER comparing the amt of work I must do versus what they do; the amt of mins per hr I must work vs theirs; my income vs theirs; my health benefits vs theirs; my personal time off (vac) vs theirs, my pension benefits vs theirs; the many more yrs of service I must work before I can start receiving a pension (in many cases 10 MORE yrs), etc, etc, etc.

Is there a degree of envy? Sure, but more importantly, it all relates to why property taxes are so high! And since many private employees have taken significant pay & benefit cuts (just to keep their jobs) while public employees continue to receive modest (standard) increases, in spite of the steady population decline, it's not too hard to understand why "it has become a negative thing."

Marcia-President Reagan turned everyone against public employees, really? I assume you must be an ardent fan of Michael Moore?

Paul asked when public employees became the enemy. The answer was when Reagan became president and turned everyone against public employees. And why is their pay more than some in the private sector? Because many in the private sector has not kept up with inflation in the salary they pay their employees, with money going to profits and upper management salaries. And Paul, you need to do research regarding congressional salary and benefits. They are in the same pension system and receive the same medical benefits as all government employees.

judeye, why should we listen to scientifically illiterate caretaker speakers like you mention. Your mommy instincts are showing. Its interesting that gas is considered renewable now. that was the basis of my hydrocarbon grower fertilizer.Non chemical, pure energy . I love the oil patch and can make hydrocarbons grow in the earth. any new science is indistinguishable from magic they say. So judeye, we should not and cannot listen to such unlearned junk as you quote , sweetly disguised as stewards of the earth nonsense. Learned liberals, judeye, tell us more junk science !It shows how woefully ignorant you are . It proves activist women and activists in general know nothing and wreck life like the progressives did.

Judeye, there is good evidence now that natural gas and oil are renewable. The earth will make them in time as it grows vegetation on the surface. Natural gas can replace fast as it is only a few carbon atoms. Oil will take a little longer as there are more carbon atoms. I have read of functioning gas wells in this area for 100 years. You wish to force your moral outlook on others, with no science to back it as there is none . The libs claim it bad when religionists do it, but it is OK for you judeye. Judeye, I do not want to freeze. I love chemicals and you do not know what you are talking about.

judeye is wrong again about renewable energy. hey judeye, what part of the following do you not understand. solar and wind do not work 24/7. even PBS said gas, oil or nuke had to be there for a back up.Thousands of acres of land will be needed to offset a single coal, nuke or oil plant. Do you understand anything about energy and production and use. A large sewer plant uses about 3 MWs. They usually have a backup generator in case of a power failure. I can hear you now judeye, the so called renewables have failed, hold your waste til the sunshines or the wind blows. tell us judeye, what part of this dont you understand. Industry needs 24/7 juice, something a renewable just cannot provide. Coal, nuclear , gas can and do. judeye wants to wreck civilization.rthats the liberal way.

kRISTOPHER - i AGREE 1000%. Why should we pay more for a service when the same service can be provided cheaper by the private sector. A good example might be the Memorial Park renovation project. That project cost taxpayers over $170,000 to be done by a city employee who also received over $40,000 in overtime pay. It is likely the same project could have been done by a private contractor at half the cost. City leaders have no shame. I would support kiyak for mayor. She appears to be the only elected official with a brain and a conscience.

We may need the SERVICES that government jobs provide, but MOST of those JOBS could be privatised - bid out to private companies. Guidelines of what is required, and expected, could be set contractually. Competition for the work would keep the cost more in line with the private sector.

Actually the news says about 2000 showed up at the rally. And who showed up means nothing except free publicity for some. Won't matter because Cuomo and his 40 thieves will do what they want anyway.

American...about 3,000 showed up.

Including Natalie Merchant and Arun Gandhi (grandson of Mahatma). Great speakers...good energy...and a commitment to stop this type of drilling in our State.

Rather, let us move forward with alternative energy...RENEWABLE energy that will provide many good paying jobs and will NOT destroy our planet.

My favorite speaker...called it a MORAL issue. I cannot agree more. We are the caretakers of this earth we call home. We all need to be involved in safeguarding and protecting our Mother Earth for all future generations. It is our responsibility and obligation.

cronig, you are a simpleton and here is why. See Observer, 6/18, pgA4. An activist women is complaining about high heels and womens health. Some doctors refuse to do bunion surgery if high heels will be worn again, but have all the abortions you want. Something is wrong in society where 50 million abortions can be done at whim and we are worried about womens feet.So gals, ever wonder why you failed so much at science, business etc ? read the High heels and workers rights article in the Observer.Such an issue would never be so big to rockefellers daughter if the PBS story on STd oil was accurate. They would just know. But our modern gals, well , that is another story.Cronig, help out our modern gals.

Now we see why wilson, with his underwood tariff, the income tax for the unlearned had to do what he did. His ancestors had slaves but of course they lost the civil war. he then realized that he as a good dumb public employee had to make sure no private enterprise could ever surpass the beloved public employee with power and knowledge. The robber barons bailed out the US govt at least once. Imagine the humiliation to a public employee Paul. wilson died, but FDR continued his work.He killed the gilded age. The activist gals like tarbell, carrie nation and sanger promoted womens causes.Hey Paul ,why your beloved democrats were klanning and jim crowing in the south, std oil was rising to world supremacy in the north. Without the aid of those dumb public employees. Paul , straighten me out here, tell me about the absolute need for the dumb public employee ! Paul, Paul ! The world cries out for your knowledge !

cronig inside my bubble of historical facts and scientific knowledge, things foreign to you i will post again. Especially for Paul and judeye. Judeye, you and all activist women a modern day Ida Tarbells. It is easy to write muckracker pieces and complain. It was difficult to do what Std oil did, increase quality and reduce cost. This is something our beloved public employees and their teachers union cannot seem to do. So anti frackers, you are Ida Tarbell. Green energy is a dud. Tarbell just confirms my belief and the historical record of womens abyssmal record in science and business, Activist women and govt employees gals, continue her record. Put joy in Steiners heart !It shows the fanatical belief in govt, put there by the rise of women in politics , for their man the govt. Paul and judeye, please show us how little you know , continue writing !

cronig says nothing again for he knows nothing. hey Paul, on PBS there was a story about Std Oil and John rockefeller. At every step of the way , Paul a govt employee was there helping John yes Paul ! no I made that up. The govt became concerned after Ida Tarbell, another activist women getting it wrong again did a muckracker piece on Std Oil. Std oil grew to 2% of the US economy. The govt became concerned that so much money was in private hands.Std oil was broken up and guess what ? The value soared of the break up pieces. those dumb public employees at it again Paul.everyone except the private minds at STd oil and their competitors knew the value of liquid energy, hydrocarbons. Std oil aaved the whale and the forests as America was wood based. It displaced coal too. The dunb govt with Wilson , a democrat thought we would run out of oil. How dumb is that for a govt employee.

Steinerdzzz...here's what your glorious GOPers/RWers/TPers believe, personified and summed up better than I could have ever dreamed:

"Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) said in a late-Monday night House Rules Committee hearing on a bill prohibiting abortions after 20 weeks that the procedure should be banned because even at as early as 15 weeks a male fetus "may have their hand between their legs" and "feel pleasure."

Rant all you want from inside your bubble, but I can't ever imagine any democrat or liberal ever believing, let alone saying publicly, something so incredibly absurd -- ban abortions because fetuses masturbate -- as to stupefy the intelligence.

In simplest terms for judeye and cronig. Who pays the taxes for your sacred programs. Who invented the world we use and take for granted . Cronig we need your answer here. Why it was private enterprise. I can imagine what the early settlers said when they arrived . where is the govt employee ? Liberals, you got it backwards. The govt did not invent anything. It was the other way around. what else could clueless liberals say though ? The govt did it. Nope, private enterprise did.
