Thank You Vicki for a very good article as we near the celebration of our Independence!

Our right to freely elect whoever we choose is fundamental to our independence and freedom. We should be making laws to encourage MORE people to vote, rather than making laws making it more and more difficult for them to exercise this right. I am appalled that the Supreme Court would invalidate Section 4 & 5 of the Voting Rights Act. This law required some states (who have a history of civil rights violations) to get federal approval to change any of the voting laws. In the past it has been passed and reauthorized by wide majorities from all political parties.

Within HOURS of this decision states, like Texas, rushed to pass laws that would restrict voting and redistricting.

So much for freedom and equality for all.

Our right to vote must be protected. We should be seeking ways to increase voting, not to discourage people from voting.

Judeye, George Wallace is dead.It was 50 years ago, that solid democrat obstructed even school attendance. The libs could offer no proof of voter obstructionism like it was in the good old democratic south. You know, the liberal party, the party you adore. You keep fighting battles long since over. we should not encourage rampant voting as the people will vote themselves a greater share of the till. No govt employee or any one receiving any assistance should be allowed to vote.that would include social security receivers too. Hey vicki more facts for you. In africa 25% have no electric power, another 50% have intermittent power. Only about 25% have steady juice. That would be the oil rich areas ( white man science from Std oil ) and South Africa. Guess they need diversity. Or health care choices.

Robert, this sums up life as we know it. trillions of watts, billions of tons of ammonia products, trillions in electronic sales, trillion barrels of oil pumped. Robert are you just ignorant or a liberal? I have quoted facts, you rant.

We should all be concerned about the loss of our freedoms resulting from excessive government. If you don't pay your taxes, you lose your home. If you don't fasten your seatbelt you are fined. Try using the "N" word and your world comes crashing down on you. Try to protect your home and family from an intruder and you could end up in jail. Defend yourself from an attcker and you could end up in court. There is no such thing as an accident anymore - now it's called a "liability". Dare to erect a Christmas or nativity scene in a public place and you might be thrown out of town. Whatever you do dn't say "Merry Christmas" because it has been declared to be a non-christian holiday. Everytime a new law is passed we lose a little more of our freedom and we realize this is not the country we grew up in.

The NSA is recording everything we say. Is this one of the freedoms other countries are jealous of? "Love it or leave it." Vicki, if it were actually possible, many people would. You have to have more money than most of us have, time enough to be productive in another country so they'll want you, and a career they desire so they'll let you in. Many wannabe Canadians are stuck here. Guilt trip--basically you're saying, "Soldiers died for you, so shut up." Didn't you see the problem with this when you wrote it!? Criticizing one's country, whether you served or not, is a Constitutional RIGHT. And a civic responsibility. Take a reality check. In every other civilized country, you will NOT find people saying, "Boy, I wish I lived in America so I could have freedom." That thinking is an egocentric myth.In fact, they laugh at much of what comes out of our legislature.

Vicki, you had me agreeing until your last sentence. It is not America, love it or leave it. As citizens, we have a right, even a responsibility to make our country a better place for all it's citizens. We have lost the freedom of assembly. People are constantly being arrested for peacefully protesting, actually every Monday in NC. And look at both party's conventions, the protesters are relegated to a spot where no delegates can see them. And we are one of the only democratic countries in the world without a constitutional right to vote. That amendment has been sitting in Congress for a decade, but should be resurrected in light of the recent SC opinion. Yes, love your country, but try to make it better, reach the ideals we want it to have. Enjoy the 4th.

Dr. Phil, those are called laws. usually for people with no common sense. you are free to elect people that will revoke those laws you find confining. And by the way, there is no law against using the N word. Its just very poor taste, so please feel free to use around some of our black americans over the fourth of July and hopefully they will excercise their freedom to punch you right in the nose.

I find it ironic that Steiner’s patron saint, Telsa, had this to say about women in a 1926 interview:

“I had always thought of woman as possessing those delicate qualities of mind and soul that made her in these respects far superior to man. I had put her on a lofty pedestal, figuratively speaking, and ranked her in certain important attributes considerably higher than man, I worshiped at the feet of the creature I had raised to this height, and, like every true worshiper, I felt myself unworthy of the object of my worship.”

The preceding quote, it's suggested, explains Telsa's lifelong virginity.

He also said:

This struggle of the human female toward sex equality will end in a new sex order, with the female as superior. The modern woman, who anticipates in merely superficial phenomena the advancement of her sex, is but a surface symptom of something deeper and more potent fermenting in the bosom of the race. It is not in the shallow physical imitation of men that women will assert first their equality and later their superiority, but in the awakening of the intellect of women.”

Phil, seeing as Robert is a dedicated obamaite then maybe his master will still let him have a limited form of freedom of speech. And if his ____ buddy Cuomo gets in of course he will lose even that. And you are right he sounds like an idiot that only has one talking point and says whatever the damocratic party tells him to. You have to give credit to damocrats though, they stick to their one train thought about their king and prince.

Steiner.....Social Security recipients should NOT be allowed to vote? Are you kidding. SS was not a choice. It was a mandate. If you work you contribute to receive when you retire. To me that is an investment. I gave my money and now I receive the return. It's not welfare. I pay nothing and get money to live on. Steiner Mr. Scientist do you NOT receive SS. If you worked did you NOT pay SS? Your statement makes you sound like one of those stupid women you keep talking about!!!!

Ben Franklin, one of our more amazing founders, when asked after the Constitutional Convention of 1787, "Well, Doctor, what have we got: a Republic or a Monarchy?”, Franklin replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

Franklin called it correct: our country, our democratic republic, our laws, our society has been and is an ongoing experiment -- it changes all the time as we have changed and will continue to change.

Yup, this isn't the country we grew up in and in time, it won't be the country our children will have grown up in. It is as it should be: It is neither the country that your parents grew up in, nor your grandparents nor heck, even Ben Franklin himself.

Despite all the past, present and upcoming changes, our democratic republic and its inherent ideals -- still endures.

That's what July 4th is all about.

Some amazing comments, especially from Steiner! Maybe he shouldn't be allowed to vote.

But the old saying "If you don't like it here leave" should be changed to "If you don't like it, help do something to change it."
