'no one likes an assessor' That seems to be what is echoed whenever Wheelers name comes up. Stockton said the same thing when they reappointed her there a couple of weeks ago. Are those her words?

If you come to my town & can afford the best spot in it, then you can afford to pay for it.If you want to own my lake front, then pay for it. I have no children in school & I still have to pay school taxes. What makes you better than me??? It s like the guy that owns a $160,000 Motor home & bi tches about the price of gas..

This issue is not about lakefront versus non-lakefront although certain people would like everyone to think that. This issue is about Town of Portland property owners including Village of Brocton. Collectively we paid an extra $658,000 in property taxes this last year & will continue to pay if problem isn't fixed. This includes extras in school, town & county taxes. While we have paid more, surrounding towns sharing school districts have paid less. Property owners in town of Portland or Village of Brocton, look at your taxes comparing this year to last & you will see about 15% increase. Of this $658,000 extra, only about $120,000 of it came from lakefront & vacation properties. Rest of increase was paid by everyone else in town and village. This didn't even relate to sales, state did not use a single sale to come up with these inflated values. It is crazy and all the citizens of the Town of Portland and the Village of Brocton should be outraged.
