Today's situation is somewhat reflective of the late 1940's, when the state ordered the creation centralized districts. Increasing enrollment and new education requirements were cited as primary reasons. Those two, three and four room schoolhouses that dotted the townships since the civil war were phased out by the late 1950's as the new school districts completed the building projects required by centralization. I guess you could call what's happening now "Centralization, Part II", this time made necessary by the economics of depopulation and shrinking tax bases.
