July 28, 2013

By LIZ SKOCZYLAS OBSERVER Mayville Bureau It’s no secret the county budget is tight. Accounting for roughly 1 percent of the budget is the base salary of the top 25 highest-paid county employees....

Phil - why does it take over $400 thousand to run the DA's office? Murders, drug dealers, DWIs, rape ...there are thousands of crimes committed each year. The lawyers prosecuting in many cases are making far less than the private defense attorneys who handle half the case load on a regular basis. I'm far less concerned with that than the Human Resources Director being 8th on the list at $88,000 ...more than #3000 more than the county executive. Give me a break. He has 1 department to run. The County Executive oversees them all. It makes no sense.

This article leaves a lot out. The DA's salary is set by the state. You have 4 Sheriff employees making more than the Sheriff and 17 people making more than the County Executive. At least 6 of those top 25 are union. I'm not a fan of increasing pay $20k at a time, but back to the pay raises for County Exec, County Clerk and Sheriff ...a cost of living increase each year would at least keep them above the staff they manage. I would love to know the title of the general employees making over $80k. That's just ridiculous.

By presenting these salaries as only 1% of the total budget it tends to minimize the excessiveness of county spending. The headline should have read "IN SPITE OF DYING COUNTY ECONOMY OVER $2.3 MILLION IS SPENT ANNUALLY ON MANAGEMENT SALARIES". WHY DOES IT TAKE OVER $400,000 TO RUN THE DA'S OFFICE? Who are the unnamed county employees making over $80,000? Which of these positions can be privatised at a lower cost? Which of these bureaucrats could match those salaries in the private sector? It's certainly not hard to understand why we live in a dying county. Detroit - move over - Cgautauqua County may be next in bankruptcy court.

The psychiatrist must be there to treat the other high earners. Why do we have one anyway can't that work be outsourced?

Nothing surprizing here, these are prevailing wages and I am glad to see someone is making a decent wage.($75-$100 per hr. None of it is being critisized by the chamber of commerce or the Dumbkirk Observer. It seems ANTI-GOV/TAX (R)T-Baggers like government jobs or should I say public paychecks! W stayed for a second term.

Very attractive salaries indeed. Thank you CCLeg for being so generous with OUR money. Now, if you want to **** off us lower-paid, private employees even more, list the pension benefits these public employees will earn. Many will receive more money per/mo retired than we will earn thru working.

How much money per yr does the county contribute toward the public employee pension fund?

All of these ridiculously-high paying jobs could and should be either privatized or sent offshore. We might not save any money but we'd be helping to save capitalism from those who would turn us into card-carrying socialists.
