September 7, 2013

I wonder how many readers decided to get involved with making our communities better? I’d love to know what age groups got motivated....

Ms Malone sounds completely b*tchy and holier than thou to me and she cherry picks her stats. The US birth rate is now at it's lowest. Yes, despite recent declines, the US and UK have the highest rate of teen pregnancies. However, a lower proportion of teen pregnancies are aborted in the US. Also other "developed" nations have a higher rate of birth control use among teens rather than the naïve and idiotic "abstinence only" cr@p pushed here. Ms Valone needs to learn "slut shaming" and "blaming the parents" are clichéd sound bites and not constructive problem solving.

Have to teach responsibility to our leaders if we expect the youth to learn it. It's not always the other guy's fault.

maggie, who has run the educational system since the 60's ? The liberals. What has happened since then ? An explosion of unwed mothers and the black family destroyed. You want more of the same ? get the liberals and the govt out of education and things will get better. I love judeyes reponses, always the same. Give not take. hey judeye, we pay 40% ish of our incomes in taxes have two income families and she wants us all to give more. Golly what confusion from a liberal. No cause and effect from judeye. It is amazing how the libs escape responsibility from the very mess they created. we have a war on men in society, cleverly disguised as a war on women and society is going down hill fast.we need strong father figures, illegal now as it is regarded as child abuse. there were spankings in schools back in the 70's, but the do gooders got rid of that. at every problem you will find a liberal at its root.

Many of the young are involved in projects around our communities. I was with a group as we pulled invasive species from a creek in Dunkirk. I have seen them do beach clean ups, clean up the road ways, pull weeds, just to name a few of the ways many of the young people help to improve our communities.

My own grandhcildren have worked at lemonade stands and bake sale to help those affected by earthquakes. Love that they are learning to GIVE not just take.

As for the pregnancies, we need to give out more information on contraceptives and how to access them easily throughout our County. Abstinence might be the best, but realistically we know that many teens will still engage in sexual activity (just look at how many from very good, stable, religious families become pregnant while a teen) Teach them how to care for their own bodies, including how to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
