Just how do you do this by mistake? I'm pretty sure most candidates don't even have access to their campaign checkbooks. That's the treasurer's job. Something doesn't smell right here.

Are you purposely ignoring the entire point of the article/situation? Not that he paid his taxes late, that he used campaign funds to pay them back. Big difference.

Maybe the larger question is how can you count on a guy who paid his taxes late 38 times - 18 times since election in 2010 - on the Ways and Means Committee?

Saying he got caught is not true,he caught it himself, corrected it,and self reported the error. Having said that(I gave him the benefit of the doubt)if investigations prove to the contrary of his explanation then he should be punished.

Mr. Reed discovered the mistake himself and reported it immediately. It's not like he got caught trying to hide something.

Why wouldn't this guy go to prison just like a normal person would? Different laws for different folks. What a pathetic country we live in.

It’s pretty hard to call this “an oversight.” Campaign funds/accounts are firewalled from personal accounts. This would be like a lawyer or banker taking money out of your trust fund to pay his personal expenses. Sorry, Tom, ya got caught.

Come to VA and state-level politics and it’s a different story – you can pay anything out of your campaign coffers you want. Property taxes? Sure. Take some friends to dinner? Go ahead. Use the funds for your kids’ college expenses? No problem. It’s all legal.

The VA gov (current under investigation by the FBI) took $140k from the CEO of a company currying favor with the state – the guy paid for the gov’s daughter’s wedding reception, the gov’s wife got a $15k shopping spree, etc. So far VA taxpayers have paid over $100k for the gov’s lawyers. The state attorney general – running for governor this fall – took $18k from the same guy. After both were found out, they paid it back. Oops.
