Your right George. Using a Psychologist position to prove that union employees earn to much money is simply brilliant. Please stop drinking Mr.Edwards cool-aid. The money wasted on salary and benefits is at the top of the food chain. It only requires about a fourth grade education to do the math. And Phil, this may be over your head, but there are many public sector jobs that would be absolutely foolish to contract out. Also you are wrong in saying that there is no mechanism to control cost. If that's the case, why do we have a County Exec, a legislature, and many high paid County managers and department heads? That's where all you tax dollars are going. Compare the union employee benefits to that of county managers, then come talk to me.

Public employees should have never been given the right to organize. When a private sector employer is in trouble they downsize or go out of business. Competition dictates wages and benefits within a given industry. In the public sector there is no competition. Therefore, there is no mechanism to control costs. The final result is that Chautauqua County and New York State have lost their ability to compete for investment in new business and jobs. Our population is dropping, our children are leaving, businesses are closing, we are on a course of self destruction and yes, we can blame it all on unions.

Captain, you may recall a recent article that listed the top paid employees in the county. If you exclude the judges and the DA, whose salaries are set by NY state, most of the top pays are hourly employees and not management including the top paid employee, a psychologist. So I would have to disagree with your assessment.

Taking the top earners and mixing them in w/the lower paid workers to deliberately mislead the public into believing that lower paid workers earn much more than they actually do is deceitful. Coincidently, this skewed method also serves a similar purpose, which is to divert attention away from where the "real" excessive salaries are being paid, most notably on mgrs, dept heads, admins, etc.

As I said before, if the CCLeg is serious about reducing the deficit, it should focus on pay modifications for ALL county employees (including mgmt), NOT just unfairly target union workers at the CCH.

Whatdya think, George?

If the Home is sold to the current prospect this will be out. They will all have to apply for their job. That friends is called union busting.

County employees are in a pretty good position. Even though this agreement would show no pay rate increases until 2014 remember that they received step pay increases, even without a contract.

Also, even though an average of $37,000 a year sounds low, it is still well above the average salary in our county which is about $26K. Add to that benefits that far above the private sector. Their share of healthcare premium is only 10%. The private sector is closer to 50%. Plus pension retirement benefits and 40 to 50 paid days off per year when the private sector is around 20.

Overall, they work hard for their money. But it's a pretty good situation for county employees.

When you realize that the median pay of $37,000 includes all the professionals, supervisors and managers pay it is not much for the average worker. Most people see that amount and think of the cleaners and nurses aides making that type of money. They do not. Many county employees make such little money they qualify for benefits. $.41 times 35 hours per week for 52 weeks equals $746.20. An increase of $746.20 over three years equals $4.78 GROSS a week. If they are fortunate to work 40 hour job it equals $5.46 When you think of the cost of living, it sounds like a loss to me and that is before they increase all their insurance costs.

After 2 years Edwards now thinks he will be able to have a contract in place before he leaves. The Union was willing to make concessions a long time ago. It would have saved the county a significant amount of money. Why did he not act on it then? The median pay is $37,000 plus per year. How much do the supervisors make in the ivory tower of Mayville. Are they going to make any concessions? Another one of Edwards blunders.
