Its really funny how the tea party was ecstatic when the government first shut down. "we have never been more energized" said Michelle Bachmann, then the polls started coming in and they showed 60% of the people did not like the fact they shut down the government. so poor Michelle and Ted Green eggs and ham pretty much disapeared and it became the Presidents shut down thanks to corporate giant FOX jazeera.

Our government has become a place where taxpayers pay huge amounts of money to send people to Washington to play the blame game. Kick them all out and find some people who are willing to really work on something besides their own pay, benefits, and pensions.

Just another very untruthful..very right wing slanted...editorial.

The President of the USA does not decide which departments or services are funded and which are not during a government shut down as this article suggests. Good Grief, you really think Pres Obama is sitting at his desk..oh shut this down, leave this open?

It is based on something called LAWS.

"federal employees are designated as either "essential" or "non-essential" workers. Essential workers, the approximate one-third of the federal work force who "provide for the national security" or for the "safety of life and property," such as Congress, the president, Defense Department officials, Transportation Safety Administration workers, food inspectors, air traffic controllers, uniformed military personnel, border patrol agents and others, will continue work and be paid when the government reopens. The remaining federal employees are furloughed with no guarantee of retroa

"ACA spending is from mandatory funding or from funds not affected by a lapse in appropriations "

Does that clarify it for you editorial staff?

By the way it is the small group of right wing extremist in one party who have shut down our government. The American people know this, just look at any of the recent polls. Lord help us all, if these kooks do not understand that we MUST pay our bills and that YES a default, even close to a default, is a REALLY REALLY BIG DEAL.Catastrophe, Insanity, Chaos, Global financial Disaster...just a few of the choice words used by real life economist to describe what will happen if we default.

Where are the Margaret Chase Smith's when we need courage? To stand up against this group of extremists who seem to be willing to ignore our laws, ignore our Constitution, and push our entire Country over the cliff. for what? Even they do not know...ask them...

I offer a question...out to anyone..but particularly to my more conservative fellow commentators here.

What do you think of the House Rule change of House Rule XXII Clause 4 that was changed on Oct 1 of this year, just before, actually in preparation, of a shut down of our government?

"House Republicans changed parliamentary rules so as to prevent any member of the House from being able to bring up for a vote the Senate version of a government funding bill." Rather this is limited to ONLY Rep Cantor or his designee.

If the HOUSE were permitted to vote the shut down would end...TODAY. Democracy has now been suspended. The Speaker forgets he is SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE..THE PEOPLE'S HOUSE not just speaker of the GOP.

I am appalled.

what are your thoughts? Do you think one party..either of them..has the right to change the rules just to accommodate their views? What happened to the People's voice? Why are we being denied a vote in OUR HOUSE? Why have they suspended D

Judeye might I remind you that your socialist friend Obama directed his puppet Harry Reid to refuse the bill passed by the House to fully fund the VA disability program? Many of the WWII vets that I spoke with Sunday receive disability compensation along with many others from the other campaigns. SPEAKING OF LAWS JUDEYE,WHEN WILL YOU EXPLAIN HOW OBAMA WAS ABLE TO CHANGE TWO LAWS OUTSIDE THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CONSTITUTION? I see your pal the Robot is up to his usual lies with the gleeful comment, you might want to put him in touch with Marcia after she twisted the same comments. You are the matron of the local socialist movement are you not?

Judeye what do you think of Reids trick? Reid and 50 members of his caucus voted to change Senate rules unilaterally to prevent Republicans from forcing votes on uncomfortable amendments after the chamber has voted to move to final passage of a bill. That was on October 6th. You get all your information from a left wing source so you are not aware that your friends do the same thing. You really should get what you copy and paste from several different sources so you don't appear to be a fool so often.

NBC poll released today (jointly created by 2012 Romney and Obama lead pollsters):

There is an “American center” – 51% of voters – with a “leave us alone” point of view.

55% of this “American center” call themselves moderates and agree with a mix of Republican and Democratic ideas. A majority of that 51% supports gay marriage, abortion and legalizing marijuana. But they also support offshore drilling, the death penalty and the end of affirmative action in hiring and education.

Robert Blizzard, lead pollster for Mitt Romney in 2012 and co-creator of the poll: “Just because Washington is polarized doesn’t mean America is.”

Too bad THESE aren’t the majority of people in Congress...

Toadeeew shows exactly how much of his knowledge of how the government runs, the Constitution (Obama was a constitutional law instructor at one of the US top law schools, dope) and the appropriations process he doesn't know...

...he just has to be on the clueless church lady gaggle OBSERVER editorial board.

Judging from the style of writing I am convinced that Makuch is writing the editorials for the Observer now. I'm not a big fan of Obama, but, wasn't it congress that shutdown the government?

This grid lock is a perfect example of why there should be term limits for congress and senate. Eliminate the Reid's, Pelosis etc. This is not what is good for America this is just a power struggle.

so why didn't the right care about veterans benefits when they decided to shut down the government? Why didn't they think about death benefits? It was brought to their attention a full month before on the floor that these things would happen. they were so caught up with "obamacare" that they could see nothing else, look at the interview with Bachmann. She is practically peeing her pants she is so happy shutting down our government. Take back our government and our country and vote the tea party terrorists out of office.

The Koch bros are very smart though, they fund this radical group, they call them patriots and all the while they are actually supporting the top 1%. For some reason the poor smucks like Jow, and Steiner and of course unamerican somehow think they are part of the elites. You guys are middle class my friends, not the guys that the righties represent. They confuse you with half facts and outright lies and you swallow it every time.

Yes bob, they probably are middle class...and that is the reason for their attitude. They would like to STAY middle class, not join the ranks of the EBT cardholders, become newly "disabled" by democrat definitions to collect a monthly government check, nor have to lose their lifestyle (that they worked hard to achieve) so illegals can be given citizenship because they broke the law long enough. I know this goes against your hatred of the principle "Hard work get's rewards" but take your hand out of their wallets and I think there would be a LOT more compromising occuring.

Robert, you are so blinded by your ideology that you think there is a difference between the Koch Bros and the side that you support(Dems, Libs, Obama, Reid, Pelosi, etc.). They're all the 1% that you talk about.

"I know this goes against your hatred of the principle "Hard work get's rewards" not sure how much you interact with these "illegals" Mikey. but, we have a housing boom going on in SC and believe me these "illegals" are the hardest working guys I have ever seen. Yes, construction companies hire them all the time and pay them cash money. they prefer them Mikey....not sure who you are talking about.

"They're all the 1% that you talk about." that is a correct observation and yet, they want to fix our flawed for profit health care system and the right would like to just keep making money off of it. Back in the day (no profit driven) BCBS spent .95 of every dollar on direct health care. Now it is not even .80!! The money is in wall street, bonuses and bloated salaries for the guys that cut your benefits while raising rates and you want to preserve this system.
