Vicki, one question. How did that merger between LAKESHORE HOSPITAL and BROOKS work out?

As long as you have the same type thinkers in leadership positions it doesn't matter if you have 1 hospital or 2. It won't make a difference if you have 1 school district or 18. Its about leadership and management and spending.

Call me selfish all you want because I voted no to the merger. I'll ask anyone how are you suppose to vote for a merger that will increase your property taxes in Westfield while at the same time reducing the property taxes in Brocton 30%. Is someone who owns property in Westfield really suppose to be dumb enough to vote for that?

Vicki, your article describes our problem. You had to have read the other columnists and posters, nearly all liberal. All all liberal and have the mistaken belief that the govt created everything.they got this idea i can only trace to the constant bleating by the libs themselves you did not build that. From the unfounded worries over the environment over CO2 to obamacare, they want an ever exapnding role for govt.Giving women the right to vote was a mistake as they took their emotional needs amd transfered them to the whole of society via their man, the govt. This is not suprising as women lag in science , businness, philosophy, etc. Any business watching NY will see the anti business pro govt stance. This scares business away to right to work states. That this continues in the repeated failures of the libs is due to union power in elections. They want us uneducated and poor, on the dole. Its the way they get votes and it works.

I agree with part of the letter in which the political gains of some out weighed the good of our Country in the recent shutdown of our government. I applaud those members (GOP) of Congress who put the good of our Country above any party allegiance. They showed courage and integrity something that is too often missing in our elected officials.

I am tired though of blaming our high taxes as the reason why businesses are not coming here. Note in the article re the walkaround, the experts pointed out Toronto as an example of a city with HIGHER taxes than we have, yet it prospers. We have many other issues, such as stuck in the past mentality, that are hindering our job growth. However, as long as we only look on taxes as the sole and foremost reason, we will never see the other issues that need to be addressed.

As for welfare to work..look at the participation rate BEFORE a FOR PROFIT company from out of state got the contract. It never recovered from this mistake.

listen, you are the reason we have a problem in the area. The hospitals are in trouble, not just here but across the country. Mergers may not help. OLV closed years ago. So have others. Springville i hear has been cut back. There are not enough people do sustain what we have. It was set up in better economic times. 18 districts or one ? You gotta be kidding. There would be savings if you consolidated. When private business starts abandoning an area, look out. No amount of govt money will help as the govt gets its money from private people. From the comments here and the guest articles I see, this area has some of the dumbest liberals i have ever seen.Look at school enrollments. down and down. Any business leader looks to the future and it aint good. a short statement like the merger did not work shows your ignorance.the stupidity in this area is huge.

Some just do not see the whole and total picture as evidenced by the preceding comments. Picking one or perhaps two things for ridicule without the foresight to see how they all mesh, how they all either are complimentary or detrimental to the big picture is part and parcel as to why the county is in decline.

judeye, take your position and multiply by scores of thousands and it is the problem. We pay a fortune in taxes here. we get nothing. How can other states survive without an income tax and even frack without calamity escapes you. You know nothing judeye. judeye, what economy ever taxed their way to prosperity ? It does not work.facts for judeye, the income gap has widened since her man obama took over, the blacks are worse than ever and judeye sees that as success. Judeye what would failure be ? The whole of Amercian history has been low taxation up to the income tax , imposed by another liberal, Wilson. that escapes our learned judeye. judeye, so what has the govt actually made that worked as well as private enterprise ? judeye you are learning disabled . save the planet yet ?

This writer has a problem. Its called self-interest and everyone has it. Even writing this story and the thoughts shows self-interest. If a merger doesn't make sense why vote for it. Readers do you honestly think Vicki W. doesn't go to an election and vote based on self-interest or what she thinks is right based on her thinking? Do yo think she votes based on who someone else tells her to vote for? Self-interest, something to gain, everyone does that in every part of their life so does that make everyone selfish? Yes, even Vicki W.

All those that have problems with steiner, call him/her names. But once he has the same thinking, once he agrees with you he's the best.

Goes back to self-interest. On one hand you can call steiner a jerk and on the next issue just love him/her.

judeye, the income tax started very simple. It has grown into a monster. Obama has instituted various taxes , the medical device tax, small at first but it will grow. judeye, you cannot realize that the govt cannot do everything. Your beliefs fly in the face of history and yet you still believe them. The individual mandate will grow, telling us what to eat, excercise etc . Why ? because costs wil rise faster tha never and people like you judeye will be clueless why. PROFIT bad you say. Wow, thats what founded america. Proof. Columbus went west becuz east was controlled by islam and hostile to europe. Sugar, tobacco and cotton plantations started. profit is good. Its money in our pocket, not the the dumb govt.how do all these historical facts elude you ?ACA is as bad as slavery or the income tax and you support it . crazy of you.

Steiner, the reason hospitals and schools and cities, and villages and towns are having problems in this area has to do with projected plans, budgets, spending capital, hiring people that are not needed and on and on. Its a management or lack of management problem.

You can blame it on taxes, you can blame it on lack people, you can blame it on almost anything just like the fool who runs his business into the ground because of poor management. While at the same time a businessman in the same business makes all the right decisions and grows his business.

Its all about leadership and management, that is where we lack good people. You can have 100 fools, none of them is going to make a good BOE member, mayor, trustee, superintendent or anything else. The smart people around here have no trouble making a living, and the last thing they want to do is get involved in government decision making. Too many fools to work with.

hey bulldog, i am an inventor. decades in industry. Famous throughout the world. i read a lot. almost everything i see posted here flies in the face of history. especially the libs like judeye. The govt did not, never did invent the world we have today. If Hoovers machinations did not work from 28-32, then how would the libs expect the new deal to work ? How would you expect the income tax and obamacare to work ? They will and have drawn trillions out of the economy. that judeye supports this is amazing. She buys stuff made by privat enterprise yet suprisingly supports the govt. From petrol, chemicals, energy, my products, electronics, private industry led the way and along arrives judeye and says the govt did it !! More govt. She is deluded beyond all imagination, to the point of mental illness. read american history, most of the time, the govt was doing dumb things, led by dumbocrats and activists.

Steiner, I agree the less government the better. But does merging everything together make it better even if the merged districts or hospitals are still run by the fools that couldn't get it done with their own little hospital or school district? I say NO!

Back to leadership, we have a lack of it in this area.

If you are the wiseman and investor that you claim you should know that a smart man/woman can be a success ANYWHERE. THAT GOES FOR RIGHT HERE IN CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY.

The failure we experience in this area is due to the lack of real businessman or hard workers. It really has nothing to do with taxes, or growth or anything else.

Hence, that is why you are so successful living right here in Chautauqua county. It wouldn't be fair for everyone to be as smart as you, that would be to easy. That is why you and very few others have made it, while others have failed and why others have just quit and left the area. They want the easy way out.

hey bulldog, ya missed the crux of the argument. The population is declining. there are no prospects here. we cannot frack on our own land . This inspite of the boom out west where water is scarcer. No mgm at any level except the state can turn this.Reduce govt and tax burden. People i know that went south or west cannot believe the low tax burden. they wonder why we pay it in NY while other states dont require it. mergers will arrive by force majeur. The birth rate is low. everything points to a decline. If money was not the issue, the govt would issue vouchers for choice. They would reduce the tax burden and say, the money is not important to us. that this does not happen tells me money and taxes are important to the libs. It was the libs who gave us the income tax.If money was not important they would not have stolen it. Fact of history. Its money and control. Look at detroit.

hey bulldog, how is stating facts hate ? name calling ? its the libs who do it here.Women hating, again stating facts. I cant believe women dont read histry. i always ask younger women history questions. Guess what ? They dont know any answers ! Men did it al with rare exception. This is been in print in large eastern business papers, on tv, in books written by women who wised up, too late , in their 60's. they fell for the feminists line.Men invented everything, everything we take for granted. Even I played a role in this. I learned from the great guy minds in chemistry. Their work continues long after their death. The gals ? Not so much at all. They like their govt. I like private enterprise.I only met 2 gals in 40 years that went for science. the others liked social issues. Business helped more people than govt programs ever did or could. fact.this is hate, how ?

In order for a representative republic to function efficiently the electorate must be well rounded, well educated, and well informed. We are running a deficit in that regard around here and for that matter across the country as evidenced by some of the comments made about this and other subject matters.

A merger will not change one thing unless the thoughts and thinking of those in control change.

It does no good to take a failing school superintendent out of a small school and place them in a merged school district. Only a goal of failure will be met.

The prime examples, lakeshore after it merged with Brooks. FAILURE.

Chautauqua Lake school district after its merger, it is as broke now as any other school district.

If a merger does not change management skills and the thinking it is doomed.

Are you trying to convince me that for years now the school superintendents and BOE members of these school districts did not know the student enrollment was dropping. What action did they take? NONE

Its call projecting. With less enrollment you make decisions based to lower the cost of doing business. No action was taken. In fact, they gave higher salaries, gave incentives to retire, paid to make unnecessary improvements.

Speaking of unnecessary improvements, why did lakeshore spend 2 million dollars on their ER. If they knew the past several years they were going under, why spend that money.

Poor management, no projections. Not lack of revenue.

JoeW. you are for anything that makes a change.

If change is not for the better don't change it.

How can you expect Westfield residents to vote for change (like the merger) when it will cost them more if it is approved?

I don't understand your thinking with regards to that?

The author typifies the "special interest" problem herself, all the while criticizing it in others, by insisting and believing she has the simple, straightforward answers -- as if convenient linear, two-dimensional thinking (i.e., more mergers and less taxes) is applicable and totally appropriate to solve our highly complex, multidimensional problems.

Such thinking, such advocating, such pedestrian "common nonsense" is indicative of breathtaking ignorance perpetuated by many of the GOP/RW/TPers commentors, pundits and politicians.
