Why target ‘Bible believers?’

January 16, 2014

When I saw the picture of Christopher Schaeffer being sworn in as Pomfret Councilman with a strainer on his head and then the picture of the drawing of the statue of Satan in the Jan....

"I also know where I am going when I die and that is Heaven. My Savior Jesus Christ said "if you do not believe in Me you will end up in the lake of fire."

Aside from the sin of hubris in this comment, what are we to learn or think? That the author is very religious, has faith, and doesn't fear death? Nice example, but isn't it more complicated than that? You can wade through the many contractions of Biblical commentary, especially those within and between the Old and New Testaments--I doubt many readers are aware of these. There are many things to be learned from the Bible: one of them, I think, is not that life should be lived in fear of "the lake of fire." It should be lived, proactively, for the time granted to us. During which our deeds and actions are life (not death) images of ethics, morality, and how to live the good life. I don't hope to influence those fundamentalist "true believers"--usually, no one can change their faith but the Bib

(cont. from below); How sad that the Observer gives you the space to, first, exhibit your anti-American venom, and, secondly, to make a fool of yourself. Publishing something--including opinion--over your name is an American tradition; taking responsibility for your assertions and slanders is to stand and be a man. Why hide? Were you to say this to me in your local bar, you'd have to stand up and defend these slurs. If I'm a lowlife removed sometimes from the scene (only due to work and life circumstances), why are you afraid of me? Who are you afraid of? Why don't you have confidence in your convictions enough to reveal your name? Who are you hiding from that you feel the need to protect your anonymity? How sad and messed up you must be to bail out of one of the primary responsibilities of being an "American": to stand, in public, for what you believe. Coward.

American: (though by luck of birth only). The hatred in these columns is viral. If you could spell, maybe I'd take you seriously. I am not hiding with a screen name: that's my name, I'm in the phone book. I'm not trying to hide or advance any impression: just tell me, why won't you sign your name to these rants? How unAmerican is it to be unaccountable for your opinions? These columns are filled with "sociopaths." Your definition? Do you think your reply is not sociopathological? That hiding your real name is not equally so? Classic case of "try to reason with a fool and he calls you foolish." If you're an example of an "American," God help us. Lowlife: how about 5 books and 100 scholarly articles and a life outside of this column? And your claim to fame is, what, these posts hidden behind a name that insults what America is about. You're the problem with America. No ability to reason; no willingness to face facts; unwilling to admit your name. H

Boy you are losing it totally old man. No one has said anything about bombing your house. Now maybe that is the way you would handle it but rationale, reasonable people don't think like that. "Gutless wonder" just because I don't trust a lowlife such as you with my real name. No sir you are the coward here because you set there thousands of miles away, claim to use your real name and then berate anyone who doesn't. You are an irrational sociopath trying to impress people with your claims of who and what you are. Why do you feel the need to brag about what you claim to be? Is it because in reality you are a very little man in mind and body? Do you really feel the need to try and make yourself into a different larger then life man then you are? You sir are extreme liberal exhibitionist trying to impress people with who you are.

America: warrior that you are, what are you afraid of? Community disapproval? I split my time between two countries. Want to bomb my house? Please understand that the tenants are not to be blamed for my stances. It is the venom shown on these posts that discourages rational discussion, in our own names, and makes posters unaccountable to their consciences and, as applies, to their God. To argue in the name of God from behind a veneer of a false name is not exactly to follow the example of Jesus, Gandhi, or Rev. King--all of whom stood steadfastly for what they believed in. Perhaps your belief isn't up to that standard? Too easily accepted and repeated? Stand up publicly for your belief, as Jesus did? Otherwise your beliefs don't amount to anything but opinion hiding behind false pretenses.

You call me un-American but yet I chose to live and work in the United States, I also chose to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Can you say the same for yourself? Unlike you some of us live here and we just don't have the trust in the opposing faction to give real names. I suppose if I lived several thousand miles away it would seem safe. You know like you do. Or at least have claimed to. I don't have enough trust in human nature to post in real name and even less trust in some liberals to do it.

"Fanatical" is related to fanaticism and fantasy. Steiner and others are in a fantasy world of their own; why should we not have reasonable commentary and dialogue on what are often serious issues raised by writers? And, why should all of those who hide behind their screen names be so ashamed of their views that they won't be associated with them by name?? UnAmerican. Stand up and be recognized (Or not) for what you believe, in your own name. This is not literature-though, sometimes I get that impression from Steiner and his fellow miscreants.

American: Perhaps you haven't heard about the separation of church and state, and the need for you to keep your faith in your family and religious community and not impose it on the rest of the country. As to Steiner's "freedom of speech," consider the source and what it contributes, for example, to young people who might references these pages. We don't usually accord this freedom to fools and the insane. As as to talking "down," it doesn't take much effort, given the bar room talk that is allowed by this site. Why should any educated, rational, responsible person have to read these insane rantings: in a nation founded in the principles of The Enlightenment (Google it; you won't like it) put up with this insanity?.

"LOS ANGELES — There's no room for the baby Jesus, the manger or the wise men this Christmas in a Santa Monica park following a judge's ruling Monday against churches that tried to keep a 60-year Nativity tradition alive after atheists stole the show with anti-God messages" This is just one of several and I know you will use the lefts logic to rebut it. " entanglement of government and religion. (AP File)

A cross atop Mount Soledad in California is an unconstitutional religious display on government land and must come down, a federal judge in San Diego ruled late Thursday" It has been there since 1913. So don't tell me anti Christians aren't doing it.

marcia, you are wrong again. No non believer wants to stop a believer from practicing their religion. that is exactly what the ACA did and so did Obama suing the nuns in colorado.they are to sign a letter saying allegiance to the govt to practice their religion. Its that simple marcia. You are not thinking here. The govt has also tried to force churches to hire and fire ministers to comply with diversity goals. The govt lost on appeal. everywhere you look marcia, the govt is attacking religion. Funny you dont see that. or dont you consider that an attack on religion ?

cade , you posted on jan 17, 2:11 and 2;14 pm about uv and ir rays heating the earth. You are blaming these for heating the earth. thats not true cade. the quintescence is something other than UV or IR. You keep dancing around the subject. you do not understand what the cosmologists are saying. let me make it clear for you as you are science illiterate. the IR and UV rays are the outermost expression of the strong force, , quintescence ,dark energy that the sun puts out. All of this is modified in our various layers of atmosphere. this complex thing escapes you cadee. thats why you have a string of mocks again and again.all of this is ignord by the global warming people. al the global warming do not figure in the interaction of the various layers in the atmosphere that make our weather. heat is something that is not a 3D quantity.

American..I believe the lawsuits to drop Nativity sets is due to the use of public money to pay for it. No lawsuit to my knowledge has ever been filed to prevent a Nativity set to be displayed..say in front of a church paid for by the church.

It is when people use public money to present something that not all of the public believes in.

"no non-believers want to deny any believer their right to practice their religion" Then why so many lawsuits to stop nativity sets from being displayed. Why did the non believers force them to remove a cross from a cemetery in Calif. that has been there for something like 30 years honoring fallen service men and women? I call BS on what you claim.

Nathan, no non-believers want to deny any believer their right to practice their religion. But when they try to codify their views (make them laws) they are going too far. So a religion does not believe in birth control so they try to make it illegal. Wrong, just don't use ii. So your religion does not believe in gay marriage, then do marry a gay person. See how simple it is? Practice your own views and don't feel the need to make others practice them.

If my work is trash then so are the hadron colliders and other accelerators.does that neet with your approval regelski ? only regelski approved science is ok. so much then for alvarez and a host of other accelerators , all verified in books and in use by universities and labs. trash screams regelski.regelski, how did ya get to be so ignorant of what has happened in the last 80 years ? talking to cronig ? all science, all trash to regelski. you need mental therapy regelski. talk to a liberal ! REGELSKI, SET THESE TRASH SPEWING SCIENTISTS STRAIGHT. more for stupid cade and the libs. the quintesense spoken of by the cosmologists is NOT heat, NOT uv or even radiation as we know it. they maintain, spewing trash regelski would say that there is something other present in the universe to account for its behavior. they are correct. the ancients knew this. They called it the stuff of miracles , mocked by the libs.the only miracle is liberal largess. If one were to step into my steinertron beams, one would either fall asleep in short order or in the case of the magnifier like teslas, the pain would become so great, that one would be screaming and praying for an amputation to stop the pain. All known to the ancients. all from trash spewing books regelski would say.how did i do libs. Would one step into the hadron beam in europe? is that trash regelski ?

Cade says co2 does not absorb heat. he better tell that to the gals at the epa. Go to their website. they say co2 is a heat trapper. it is not and never has been. WHY does this newspaper support the miscreant rants of Steiner and his like? in what way is this a news service? In what way does this contribute rationally to the issues at stake? Since this is on-line, it can't be to sell newspapers? So why is this exhibitionism allowed, given the controls reputable news sources use? Steiner is an affront to intelligence and reason; exceeds the limits set; and can't even begin to say on the topics involved. This person is a menace; why allow him/her this space? To cheap to have someone actually read these posts and decide whether they meet community standards, or the standards of a local bar?
