I agree that the casino operators are the big winners in the gambling arena...but I also accept the fact that gambling exists in our society...it's here to stay.. so we might just as well get some financial benefit from it...with OTB's purchase of the aging Batavia Downs facility and the subsequent investment of millions of dollars in improvements, many benefits have been realized above and beyond the monies paid back to the counties and towns..hundreds of local jobs were saved...nearby restaurants thrive on race nights...area hotels and motels realize higher occupancy rates when out-of-towners come during the stake racing season...and then there are the countless industries that rely on horse racing for their existence...farmers, veterinarians, transport companies, feed supply stores, blacksmiths...just to name a few....and where else besides a race track has the high cost of inflation not made its mark....after all this time, a $2 bet is still all it takes to get in on the fun.

“OTB is a public benefit corporation and since 1974 has provided our county with nearly $9 million”. I don’t have the numbers, but I assume the article author does. I wonder how many hundreds of millions the $9 million cost the local economy. The OTB Corp is a huge pipeline that draws money OUT of the county, and drips a little back into the county to make look like there is some benefit. The only beneficiary of a gambling operation is the operator.
