HEARING: Officials often fail to listen

April 24, 2014

Government may say they want the public’s input, but many times, it really does not care. Take, for instance, Monday’s hearing in Fredonia on the new roof law....

On the contrary, Tj, your duty is to speak up and make noise at local meetings to let the local governments know you won't be pushed around. It is true that trying to use reason to any area board is like talking to a wall, but in the end, if we let them get away with it, they will keep on doing so because a few greedy people are soo intent on running their little fiefdoms. Time to shake some cages...

I have been to these platforms where people have an opportunity to speak. My experience with them tells me I might as well just stay home and talk to the wall. I have been there when people have felt outraged about an issue and the people in charge go ahead and do what they want anyway. After the vote, the officials scamper away as fast as they can, and the people stand there in shock and disbelief on what just took place.

You could be onto something, Christopher! Maybe this paper does need to spend more time on other things. Things like, why did the VoF spend $90,000 on water And allow the department head to retire unpenalized? And, if I'm not mistaken, why did the Fire Deprtment hire two people when EVERY other department lost people in the last couple weeks? How was the village ever able to survive until this new magic $500 bill passed? Is there a need for a class on proper treatment of the opposite sex on the village board? Anger management? Proper leadership training? The village seems to need attention in all of these areas, and you could be right. More attention and investigation is required to answer all of these unanswered questions that the deserving public is owed a proper answer to...instead of the middle finger like the VoF loves to give relentlessly to residents.

What's REALLY amazing is the amount of ink space devoted to this subject! Various Villages and school systems are fading fast, industry is leaving faster yet, a local Hospital still might close, yet we have how many articles on this subject? I'd have to say a few landlords have "ins" with the Observer. It's LONG overdue in the Village that at least SOME landlords renting to students take control of their properties. Fredonia needs MORE laws dealing with student housing, not less.
