HIGHLAND, N.Y. (AP) — More than 100 headstones in an Ulster County cemetery have been destroyed or damaged, and the local town supervisor is offering a $1,000 reward for the arrest of the vandals.
Highland Town Supervisor Paul Hansut tells the Middletown Times Herald-Record (http://bit.ly/17vFas9 ) that the issue is personal for him because his brother-in-law's gravestone was one of those damaged late Tuesday night or early Wednesday.
Hansut says the cost of the damage at Highland Cemetery is estimated at between $30,000 and $40,000.
Town Police Lt. James Janso says he believes several people were involved in the desecration. He says he's confident police will catch those responsible for the vandalism in the town 70 miles north of New York City.
