NEW YORK (AP) — Republican Edward Mangano has successfully turned away a challenge from Democrat Thomas Suozzi (SWAH'-zee) in the race for Nassau County executive.
With 89 percent of the vote counted, unofficial results showed Mangano leading Suozzi 59 percent to 41 percent.
Suozzi is a former, two-term county executive who lost to Mangano in 2009 by fewer than 400 votes.
Mangano is a former county legislator from Bethpage. He touted his record of not raising taxes and brokering a deal for private developers to rebuild the crumbling Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and surrounding property in the heart of the county.
He also got credit for his handling of the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
