NEW YORK (AP) — Sen. Charles Schumer has congratulated Bill de Blasio on winning the race to become New York City's next mayor.

The New York Democrat issued a statement Tuesday night saying de Blasio ran an extraordinary campaign. He said de Blasio was rewarded by voters with an "overwhelming victory."

Schumer said he looks forward to working closely with de Blasio to create more jobs. De Blasio beat Republican rival Joe Lhota, the former head of the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

De Blasio will take office on Jan. 1 as the 109th mayor of the nation's largest city. Current Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be leaving after serving 12 years in office.
