Cops: Cuffed NY suspect manages to steal cruiser

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Police in central New York are looking for a burglary suspect who they say managed to steal one of their cars even after he'd been handcuffed and locked in the back seat.

Syracuse police say they got a call about a burglary in progress at about 2 a.m. Friday and found two other men holding down the suspect, 33-year-old Daniel Kantak of Liverpool.

Officers cuffed Kantak's hands behind him, put him into the cruiser and were talking to witnesses when they heard tires squealing and the car racing away.

Pursuing police lost sight of the car. It was found a short while later crashed into a utility pole. Investigators say Kantak had managed to slip the cuffs in front of him and climb through a small opening in a security window to the front seat.
