Upstate NY officer arrested for stealing evidence

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York police officer has been arrested and charged with stealing $15,000 in cash from a station evidence room.

State police say Saturday Hornell City Police Officer Jennifer Speed was arrested Friday on grand larceny, tampering with physical evidence and other charges.

The 39-year-old officer was in custody awaiting arraignment and couldn't be reached for comment. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Troopers say officers in Hornell couldn't find $15,000 of cash from the evidence room in June that had been seized in a 2012 attempted murder case. They say Speed was the evidence custodian at the time.

In October, a Steuben County grand jury investigation was called after a separate investigation by a state police investigator.

Hornell is about 60 miles south of Rochester.
