An empty warehouse, pile of flammable material and suspected fire starter combined for an evening fire in the city of Dunkirk which caused no structural damage or injuries.
At 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday evening, the Dunkirk City Fire Department responded to a fire at the vacant Edgewood Warehouse on South Roberts Road. Fire crews had left the scene by 8:22 p.m.
According to Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom, the fire was likely started by an individual who set a pile of rubbish within the building ablaze.
"Someone started it," Ahlstrom said regarding the fire. "(There are) no utilities, no electricity or anything like that at the building. So, it's certainly a human factor as far as how it started."
The Dunkirk Fire Investigation Unit was not called to the scene, Ahlstrom explained, as firefighters knew exactly where the blaze originated since there wasn't much else in the warehouse. He said the fire was located in the rear of the warehouse building at the north wall where papers, pallets and old materials left from when the building was used for storage had accumulated.
"I believe they've been emptying out the building, so there really wasn't a lot in there," Ahlstrom said.
There was no damage to the structure of the building and no injuries resulting from the fire.
