Twenty years ago - 1988

When the Lakeview Correctional Facility near Brocton, a 700-bed medium security prison for men, is completed, it is expected that 425 jobs will be created at the site. A total of 253 will be involved in correctional security with 83 in the civilian program and another 89 in civilian support. Generally, 20 percent of the new employees at the prison facility will be made up from the local workforce.

Thirty years ago - 1978

A "Do You Remember?" photo reminds readers of the days when Dunkirkers bought a good deal of their ice from John E. Shear and son Ira P. Shear back in 1911, and the Shears bought it from the newly-installed ice-making plant at the Dotterweich Brewery. The photo, submitted by Francis X. Dotterweich, was taken on Dove Street by a then teen-age cameraman.

Forty years ago - 1968

Two automobile agencies in Westfield - Julian Buesink's Ford Sales and Service, and Marshall Everts' Hillview Mercury Sales - will be combining and serving the public soon at the present Hillview Mercury location on West Main Road. Construction is presently under way for a seven-car showroom and 18 garage service areas.

Fifty years ago - 1958

The Rev. Vernon F. Squire has been installed as the fifth pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dunkirk.
