POSTED: January 3, 2009

A 37- year veteran of the Social Security Administration and one of the four original employees of the Dunkirk Social Security office when it opened in 1974 retired Friday.

Claims Representative Madelyn Bradigan, who has held several different positions over the years, was honored with a luncheon hosted by fellow staff members at the office at 437 Main St. She will be presented with a certificate from Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, and congratulatory letters from Commissioner Astrue and from Beatrice Disman, SSA's Regional Commissioner.

Bradigan has interviewed countless individuals in the local area and processed claims for retirement, disability, Medicare and Supplemental Security Income.

She has also served as the union representative for the American Federation of Government Employees.

Daughter of Miles and the late Evelyn Barnes, Bradigan was born in Silver Creek and graduated from Silver Creek High School in1970. She served as a member of the Forestville School Board from 1988 to 2001 and the Erie II Chautauqua Cattaraugus BOCES from 2001 to 2007.

She and husband Bob currently reside in Forestville. They have hosted several foreign exchange students over the years, from Spain, Germany and Switzerland. Daughter Karen and son-in-law Army PFC Dana Smith will be stationed in Vilseck Germany in April 2009.

Madelyn's retirement plans include snowmobiling this winter all over the county with grandson Brayden and spending more time with family.
