The Dunkirk Fire Department received a report of a fire at The Boys & Girls Club, 55 E. Benton Street at 4:02 p.m. on Friday. Units arriving on the scene found a heavy smoke condition in the three-story brick building that was formally Dunkirk Public School Number 6.

The source of the smoke was traced to a fire in a heating unit in an exercise room at the rear of the building. A 1 3/4" hose line was stretched as well as a 5" supply line. The fire was contained to the immediate area of the heating unit.

The entire building was searched by firefighters and no occupants were found. According to the club staff, the fire alarm sounded and all children and staff immediately evacuated. There were about 75 children present but most were already outside in the playground area when the alarm sounded.

There were no injuries. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by Dunkirk Fire Investigators.
